McUnionists…To Be Taken Seriously?

There is a part of me that feels I should do the McUnionists…the breakaway liberal unionist party…allegedly started by Basil McCrea and John McCallister….the simple courtesy of taking them seriously.

Alas I feel justified in treating them as a joke because they themselves dont seem to be treating themselves to seriously. It is now months since they announced their new Party and nothing has happened. They dont even have a name. Perhaps a motto “Manana , Manana” (sp) is the Spanish phrase that speaks to their sense of urgency. Yet…someone appears to be poking Basil and John with a big stick. They seem to be going on a charm offensive with our local university Politics Societies. They got a feature on the BBC “The View” and coincidently a longish post on Slugger O’Toole where coincidently a core member of the Slugger team (hi Alan) was on the guest list when they spoke to students at the University of Ulster last week.

Whats going on? I have of course absolutely no idea but that wont stop me speculating. Defectors from the liberal wing of UUP have usually gone to the Alliance Party and there does not appear to be many left to defect. The arrival of a new Party in the so-called “middle ground” is of course good news for people who like that kinda thing but curiously bad news for the Alliance Party.

The Alliance Party is a coalition of liberal unionists and letsgetalongerists (with varying degrees of sincerity) who have labelled themselves as “agnostic” to share the gerrymandered trappings of power. It is therefore damaging to them electorally if they leak votes to a credible liberal unionist Party.

Alliance face a dilemna. If McCrea and McCallister had joined Alliance, like fellow defectors Parsley, Bradshaw and Hamilton…David Ford would introduce them to the media as men of vision….he would of course have to deal with the fall out that Alliance would be less attractive to nationalist voters and would barely be able to hold on to that “agnostic” designation which has served them so well.

McCrea and McCallister seem less willing to give up their overt unionism. If Alliance cant absorb the McUnionists, the only other course is to destroy them.

This makes the official launch extremely interesting. There is nobody left to defect from the Assembly Party…and not much opportunity for serious councillors to jump ship, especially with so many council seats already scheduled to be abolished under re-organisation.

Liberal unionist Trevor Ringland has already declared himself “Conservative”. And not likely that Felicity Huston or Alex Houston will throw their lot in with Basil and John…or maybe it is? And even if the McUnionist Party is a better fit for Ian Parsley, Paula Bradshaw and Harry Hamilton…surely they could not defect from the Alliance Party without looking opportunistic or silly.

So who can they attract as high profile members. They are both MLAs and thats a good start and signing up QUB and UUJ students is useful but they need recognisable people to give the Party substance.

The good folks at Platform for Change is a useful avenue. Signatories include Nuala McKeever and Robin Wilson and a fair share of academics. But ultimately the chattering classes are unlikely to do much more than chatter….or blog. Are we likely to see a high profile blogger or Sluggerite throw his or her weight behind Basil and John?

But WHY the delay? Is it Finance? Are the McUnionists waiting for a grant to be processed by a Foundation or Trust…..”innocent money, chocolate money, Quaker money”. Perhaps the Alliance Party would not like that.

Or are negotiations still ongoing? Is the Alliance Party wooing the McUnionists? A crowded “middle ground” of Alliance, McUnionist, Conservative and Green is a mixed blessing for the chattering classes. I wonder if someone is mediating discussions.

Dream A Little Dream Of Me?

Not feeling too good today. Dentist earlier this week and I am still sore and taking painkillers. And I am sleeping too much. And having weird dreams. Seemingly about the readership of this Blog.

I have just dreamed that I was in a lounge bar in Manchester, wondering if I should ask for the autographs of the 1960s footballers who were there. I was having a pub lunch, when the barman came over and told me that someone in the “other” bar wanted a word with me. He pointed someone out and I said to the barman that I didnt recognise him. The barman said that this guy “reads your blog but he has never made a comment”.

I told the barman that I would have a word with this lurker fella after I had finished my lunch. One of the men in the bar asked me what was wrong and I told him that I write a blog and there is a man in the other bar who reads my blog and wants to talk to me. Then I added “I hope this is.a Provo bar”.

Unfortunately I woke up before discovering he the mystery lurker was. He looked a bit weird…thin, curly hair, glasses and looked very intense. If you recognise yourself from this description, please identify yourself. Set my mind at ease.

CSI Belfast

CSI Las Vegas is great. Less so CSI Miami and CSI New York.

But “CSI” is nothing to do with Crime Scene Investigation in Belfast. Im not actually sure about what the initials stand for…probably Community Strategy for Integration or some such nonsense beloved of LetsGetlongerists and Conflict Resolutionists.

This is a function of Government in the hands of the Office of the Coalition Leaders Peter Robinson DUP and Martin McGuinness Sinn Fein. They have some kinda obligation to churn out a strategy to make Norn Iron more cohesive. It is not without irony that neither Robbo or Marty want a cohesive society. They owe their positions to a divided society. To be honest Im not that fussed on a cohesive society either.

So apparently there is a new CSI strategy published today. All lip service and box ticking of course. I expect a full analysis will appear on Slugger O’Toole ( they love that kinda thing). I couldnt be arsed even looking at it. And for GODS sake dont tell me whats in it.

But I notice on Facebook that there isa recommendation for cross community summer camps…which is of course minimalist. We cant have integrated education but we can have summer camps.

I actually agree with this. I think Donegal…the Glenties and Gaoth Dobhair would be excellent. Take the kids out of Belfast, Carrickfergus and Crossmaglen. They can engage in such activities as learning Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie, Ceili Dancing, Gaeilge language. There is actually a structure already in place. Its called the Gaeltacht. And as optional extras there is the opportunity to smoke cigarettes.

I hope summer camps are in July during marching season and our young rioters from two communities can be kept off the streets. Maybe form a cross community Wee Bastards group….derived from the warm glow of satisfaction we get from watching recreational rioting on TV News and we say things like “would you look at that wee bastard…he is no more than ten years old”

The Nazis herded German youth into summer camps. The LetsGetAlongerists have the same idea. Re-Education. Social Engineering. But like a lot of cross-community, letsgetalongerist crap, there is no doubt somebody might make a few quid out of it…or “job creation” as politicians call it.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I remember the good old days in the 1970s when Catholic and Protestant children were sent off to USA for a month by well meaning do-gooders. Back to the Future.

Sexual Abuse Is An Issue For Us All

Its long been my belief that crimes against women…rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence …are and should be an issue for MEN. I base this on the rather obvious truth that if one fifth of all women suffer this crime, then all men must be close to at least one abused woman….grandmother, mother, sister, spouse, daughter, cousin etc.

Good to see that on his blog, Ian James Parsley (formerly of Alliance, formerly of UNFCPUNPCU or whatever and Alliance again), the politician, businessman and linguist has shown that he also holds this view.

This is actually something which should energise ALL MEN.

If you are a blogger, I urge you to carry this message.

After Alex…

A Declaration of Interest…I have been a Manchester United fan since 6th February 1958. My sons are fans. My grandsons also.

In that time we have had two great managers. Matt Busby and Alex Ferguson. What happens next? Well seemingly David Moyes. The career of most football managers end in failure. So I am glad that the career of Fergie has ended on a high…Uniteds twentieth title and Alexs thirteenth… 2013 indeed.

And yet despite Uniteds runaway win over Manchester City…and Chelsea and Arsenal and the rest hides the fact that this is not the best United squad that Fergie has coached. Clearly a lot of credit has to go to the backroom team that Ferguson has worked with down the years. Its really all about Continuity and Consistency.

If David Moyes is named as the new manager…I will be pleased. Moyes seems to be to be cut from the same cloth as his fellow Scots (Busby and Ferguson) and has done a good job with Everton on very limited funds. Indeed that might in itself  a problem…is he the sort of manager who cant really manage at the very top?

United fans are now so used to success that ending 2012-13 with “only” the Premiership is actually an anti-climax. The early dismissal from Europe, along with the other English clubs demonstrates that the Premiership is no longer the best domestic league in Europe. The European Champions final will be contested by two German teams.

So a re-building job is what Moyes has taken on. Slow changes or Quick Changes. New broom? New hairdryer? Or…steady as she goes. Will he have the dressing room onside? Or will hevquickly identify the whingers?

Of the three goalkeepers…Lindegaard looks the most likely to go. On his rare appearances, most recently against Chelsea, he has not impressed me. Amos has been out on loan and ready to be promoted to the United bench. Whether he stays or goes, the future is probably in his own hands. De Gea has had a reasonable season. Still young, he has clearly put on weight and not nearly as vulnerable at crosses than he was. A lot of the credit goes to Eric Steele, the Goalkeeping Coach. De Gea seems to be a “confidence player” who needs the backing of a mentor. A lot might depend on how any new coach rates him.

I have never liked Ferdinand. And I have never really understood his popularity with United fans. That eight months suspension for the missed drugs test is not something that I can easily forget. He is also not the player he was. And at his age, not liable to play a full season. Vidic …hampered by long term injury..has not yet come fully back to t the player he was three years ago. Evans has improved but is he really top drawer by European standards. Smalling and Jones have arrived over the past few seasons. But both seem injury prone. Yet they are now in an England squad.

Evra has gone backwards over recent seasons but had no real competition from Fabio (who did not impress on loan with QPR and likely to leave) but under pressure from new arrival Buttner, he has regained form. Rafael has had a good season.

It is hard to see David Moyles having the same connexion with Giggs (39) and Scholes (38). Giggs is signed up for another year and Scholes will likely retire…again. Giggs will be relegated to a mere supporting role Next year. Yet the man brought in as his replacement, Young, has shown very little consistency. I am not a fan of Nani and I think Fergie has indulged him too much. He is selfish and frankly below United standard. Valencia might have slowed up since his broken leg. He seems to struggle more than he did and that final ball is too wayward.

Fletcher is likely to retire thru illness. And Cleverley is not yet the finished product. Carrick has had a good season. Powell is for the future. Kagawa a decent squad player but there is a suspicion that United need him for commercial rather than football reasons…the Japanese and wider Asian market. Anderson…..has never lived up to his reputation. He should move on.

Moving on…Rooney? He wanted to move a few years ago. And there are rumours about him going this time. United fans dont like him (and David Moyes might have a long memory ). There are fitness concerns about Rooney. And I think we have seen his best already. Van Persie is of course the main reason that United won the title. Hernandez is popular…an impact sub rather than a starter but I rate him. Macheda (already on loan in Germany) will move on. Wellbeck…I cant see the fuss….Bambi on ice, he seems a long way short of United standard.

So did the squad that I have just described actually win the Premiership. Yes…and by a distance. but surely a lot of that must be down to Alex Ferguson. He had the drive and the squad were driven. Football is a team game…and the art of the manager is to make a team more than the sum of its parts. Ferguson has built four United teams but this one is the weakest. No Schmeichel. No Keane. No Cantona. No Irwin.

David Moyes? He needs to establish himself early. In Press Conferences. On the training ground. Look out for cliques within the club. And impress the fans in the first five games of the new season. Thats where his reputation will be made. dropping too many points at the start of his United career and the first “Moyes Out” chants will be heard.

A new back room staff? Probably but not completely. And certainly re-building and his first port of call might be Everton….Leighton Baines, Seamus Coleman maybe. Phil Neville on the coaching staff?

Apologise For This!

Living in Belfast in the 1970s was not a lot of fun. Death was everywhere. I was reminded of this just lately, when I was preparing a list of people who I knew…who ended up as statistics. Names in the book “Lost Lives” by David McKitterick and Others. Really it is the only book needed on The Troubles. The deaths themselves are the history of the Troubles.

Living as I did in West Belfast, there was always a possibility of being killed by any one of the three participants in the Conflict. The IRA were extremely active in the area. Their guns pointed out of the area. I was not on their radar and unless I walked over a booby trap bomb, or became an active informer for the British or RUC (extremely unlikely as I chose a life of ignorant bliss) then I was very unlikely to end up a victim of the IRA. Besides they had no hatred towards me.

Stopped by British Army at checkpoints, searched and deliberately provoked, I DID see hatred in their eyes. And frankly I hated them back. In fairness to them, they generally did not want to be on the Falls Road…they themselves lived in much greater danger than I did. They were active targets. And each face they saw on the Falls Road was at best apathetic to the fate of a young Green Howard from Middlesbrough and a young Black Watch from Musselburgh. Getting a late night kicking from a British soldier was always a possibility ( it never happened to me) or subject to verbal abuse (that did happen to me). And there was always the possibility that the Brits would actually shoot me. Too many innocent victims were shot and routinely slandered in death.

But there was a third fear…realistic and more scary. The Sectarian Assassination. We all carried our “Prayers to St Joseph” laminated cards which was hoped would prevent us falling into the hands of our enemies. In 2013, it is almost impossible to understand the fear of the UDA and their Romper Rooms and the UVF and the Shankill Butchers. “Sectarian Assassination” does an injustice to those victims, whose deaths were lonely, prolonged, agonising and humiliating.

I am not holding any brief for the IRA and their actions such as the mass bombing of Belfast in July 1972…Bloody Friday or any other attack by bomb or bullet. Nor am I going to play the loyalist politician game of talking about a hierarchy of victim.

What I am going to do is say that there was a hierarchy of “combatant”. The IRA and the Brits were opposite sides of the same coin. Of course unionists would not like me saying that. They have issued their respective apologies for Bloody Friday and Bloody Sunday….but should they? Even in a pro-forma way? They fought their wars and for the most part played within their rules.

Unionists would see the IRA and UVF-UDA as two sides of the same coin. They are wrong…deliberately so. It elevates loyalists to a status that they dont deserve. If loyalist thugs wanted to serve their community…the option to join the legal RUC and legal UDR was open to them. Nationalists had no such legal option.

I am not saying that IRA were rebels with a cause. But I am clearly stating that loyalist paramilitaries were a rabble without a cause…except sectarian murder. The British Bullet is one thing. The IRA Bomb is one thing. The Loyalist Meat Cleaver which EVENTUALLY ended your life is very different.

Republicans have apologised for their excesses. The British have apologised for their excesses. The Loyalists….their entire campaign was about Excess. Republicans do themselves no favours by seeing the loyalists as people somehow caught up in something beyond their control.

So why does Miriam O’ Callaghan tackle Gerry Adams on his alleged involvement with the IRA? Why does Gerrys insistence that he was never involved with the IRA irritate so many journalists?

Well…lets start with the premise that journalists are hypocrites. Twenty years ago as the Peace Process was gaining momentum, journalists played the Northern Iron Office game of differentiating between Sinn Fein and the IRA. Fair enough. I went along with it as well. All for the Common Good. Lets be adult about this…the whole point of thea Peace Process was to grt the IRA to stop shooting and bombing and get them into Government. Creative Ambiguity dictated the distinction was made. And it worked well….too well…Sinn Fein was only supposed to be the minority nationalist party but…oops Sinn Fein ended up the majority nationalist party.

So what do journalists do? Having helped in making a distinction twenty years ago..they now seek to blur it.

Questions are asked of Gerry Adams. He denies his own involvement and apologises for the IRA excesses. But nobody asks these questions of loyalist paramilitaries. And they have much more to answer for. They are still involved in criminal activity. And nobody can quite get their heads around the sheer sectarian nastiness of the 1970s.

So why arent questions asked? Well…loyalists were always a marginalised part of the Troubles. A sideshow? Except of course for the people bereaved thru their butchery. They were never meant to be part of the solution.

Was that butchery part of the Conflict? Or was it something different? Just serial killing using the Conflict as a cover?

And yet for me that butchery defines the Troubles. The wife who was phoned by her husbands killers so she could hear the torture….or Rosemary McCartney who was abducted with Patrick O’ Neill….and taken to a UDA Romper Room …where Rosie was forced to SING for her killers….while watching Patrick being tortured by Davy Payne.

Manchester United Fan Arrested On Sexual Abuse Charges

A few days ago, I reported that a leading Manchester City fan had pleaded guilty to sexual abuse charges. So today I can blog that yesterday a leading parliamentarian was arrested and questioned on abuse charges. He is a well-known Manchester United supporter.

Is it in any way relevant? Absolutely not. But I take my lead from the market leader in this kinda thing. Pretty damn stupid, isnt it?
