FJHs St Patricks Day Message…Urbi Et Orbi

There is something about St Patrick’s Day.
But I am not exactly sure what it is.
To explain it…requires a History lesson. And there is something about the Irish. We live and breathe History.
It is a cliche that some nations are cursed because they forget History.
The Irish cant forget History…its also a curse.
Talk to a Historian for half an hour …we talk History.
Talk to an Irish Historian for half an hour…we talk Irish History.
Sorry…we just cant help it.
An obsessional desire to set the record straight.

So St Patrick’s Day.
Fifty years ago in Belfast, it was merely a small religious occasion. Catholics went to Mass, wore a shamrock, little girls wore green ribbons….and maybe some token Irish Dancing in Church Halls. My family was a non-drinking family who despised alcohol(I dont drink either) so there was a certain sadness with them if they saw a neighbour who had obviously been “drowning the shamrock”
Of course it is also true that in Belfast in my childhood…overt expressions of Irish Culture were frowned upon.
It was an atmosphere which was anti-Irish. If “culture” was frowned upon, then “nationality” was simply not allowed. The Irish National Flag was actually illegal in Norn Iron until the 1970s.

St Patrick’s Day…as a celebration …actually has its origins in the American Colonies in the mid eighteenth century…ironically the original celebrants were anti-Catholic.
But basically by the mid nineteenth century…Gangs of New York territory…it had become an overt celebration of Irish nationality and Catholicism…the labourers and domestic servants having an “in your face day” confronting the Establishment in the major American cities.
And as the Irish have integrated and prospered in the United States, then it takes on the character of being an American Success Story.
The Huddled Masses who went thru Ellis Island did ok…thats the narrative.

And yet St Patrick’s Day is celebrated world-wide. I think the Internet helps. There will be parades in Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow…not just where two Irish people gather together but the incredible thing is that the “feel good factor”, the story of triumph over adversity…indeed the simple story of SURVIVING…resonates.
We survived adversity and we will still take the opportunity to be “in your face” on one day in the year.
The Story of Ireland is NOT about Historic Success. It is about Historic Survival.
We are still here…and we are going to make sure that you know we are.

The irony is that Irish people actually went to New York to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.
They came back with the stories of Parades and Green Beer.
And the Irish thought….St Patrick’s Day ….”this looks like a good idea. I wonder if we should celebrate also”.
So we have the odd situation that the Dublin St Patrick’s Day parade is actually an importation from USA…indeed most of the marching bands will be from USA.

So it is easy now to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in Dublin….and indeed every major American, European, Asian and African City.
And indeed British City.
And where the Irish ended up…USA,Canada,Australia, England, Scotland…Argentina.
One of the things that I really only discovered after going online in 1998, is that there is actually a lot of goodwill towards my small nation of six million people.
Apart from occasional cliches and negative national stereotyping…it is actually very heartwarming.
And I am …I suppose…envious.
Because….
Because I live in”Northern Ireland”, just about the only place in the world where St Patrick’s Day cannot be celebrated in an honest way.
In my home city, Belfast …St Patrick’s Day Parades were not legal in the City centre until 1997. It was an overt display of Irish national identity. ANd therefore not tolerated by Unionism.
Belfast is thankfully a multi-ethnic city. People from India, Hong Kong, Philippines and several Eastern European nations honour us with their presence, enriching the city I love. But the City is now 55% nationalist and Norn Iron is 45% nationalist.
To take the view that Belfast is just another city in the United Kingdom is of course logical in unionist terms but the extension of that logic is that the “Irish” are the biggest ethnic minority in “this part of the United Kingdom” and at least worthy of as much consideration as Indians, Chinese and Eastern Europeans.

It is possible to celebrate St Patricks Day as one of three things.
1…a religious event, commemorating the Man who brought Christianity to Ireland 1,500 years ago.
2…Irelands National Day, celebrating our Nation.
3…a celebration of Irishness as a mere ethnic group.

To be fully inclusive ALL of these must be recognised. Yet in Norn Iron, the National Flag will be conspicuous by its absence.
Is it really possible to celebrate Cinquo de Mayo without a Mexican Flag?
US Independence without the Stars and Stripes?
Bastille Day without the National Flag of France?

The nature of a National Day is that it is exclusive to a nationality and inclusive to everyone of that nationality.
Political correctness dictates that in Norn Iron, the National Day of Ireland must be inclusive of British Unionists. That is nonsensical.

But thats my annual rant …
On a lighter note…three postcards.
This one is Saint Patricks Grave, Down Church of Ireland Cathedral, County Down.
image

The postcard (below) was issued by An Post in 1999. It is a pre-paid postcard issued by An Post (the Irish Post Office) and was valid for postage anywhere in the world.
In the early 1990s for a few years, An Post issued sets comprising maybe six to eight pre-paid cards. This was actually quite a bargain and good for business …for An Post. Not so good for newsagents, card shops which sold “folded” cards. No real point in buying an expensive greetings card and then make the journey to the post office to buy a stamp.
The retailers certainly objected.
In Ireland we do not…generally speaking…send St Patricks Day cards within Ireland. We tend to send them to our friends abroad.
I have several of the pre-paid postcards from the early 1990s.
An Post has stopped issuing the pre-paid cards but a St Patricks Day stamp is now part of the annual Programme.

The postcard (below) is St Patricks Day in Belfast in 1997, the first year that the parade was allowed to go by Belfast City Hall.

So
HAPPY ST PATRICKS DAY

“Lord” Ballyedmond…An Alternative Tribute

Its not exactly classy to speak ill of the Dead.
And maybe, Death is so much of a tragedy to the bereaved that we should just hold our tongues at even the most unlikely “tributes”.
But sometimes the record just needs to be put straight.

Edward Haughey was born in County Louth in the Republic of Ireland and a successful business man. And in the 1990s sat in the Irish Senate as a Fianna Fail nominee. So far …so predictable.
And then he is appointed to the British House of Lords as a “Unionist”
So clearly not the kinda man who wants to sit in a legislature as an ELECTED person.
Thats the kinda Parliamentaian that he was.
He died a Conservative “lord”.
Lord Ballyedmond of Mourne.i
And he was a multi-millionaire. How was he as an Employer. Well …we cant ask the Union in his Newry factory because he did not actually allow unions about the place. I have heard stories that I certainly believe and none point to his affection for his work force.
And I do know that one of the people I love most in the world had to jump thru hoops just to get a day off for medical reasons.
Presumably Eddies death was on his own time…and not in working hours.

If you ever travel the road from Newry to Kilkeel in County Down….you may notice that there is a very long and very high brick wall along the road.
Thats Eddies Wall. Planning Permission is for ordinary people…not multi-millionaire members of the “Lords”…Eddie threatened that he wpuld close his businesses if he had to bring the wall down.
Such was his contempt for local people.
Actually local people could not access “his” beach at Ballyedmond Castle….Ballyedmond Castle for fecks sake. Have you ever heard the like of it?
Thats the measure of the Man. Classy….Fur Coat, No Knickers.

Of course the Norn Iron Assembly Business Trust have already mourned the Old Sod.
He was a non-parliamentarian(sic) Board member.

Oddly little or none of the above has been mentioned in the glowing tributes this week.
Dare I guess that his grave will be surrounded by a small 12inch brick wall to recognise Eddie Haugheys detachment from mere mortals who are voters, employees at his factory or mere residents of scenic South Down.

Good News Week…For SDLP

So here is a welcome piece of News for SDLP. They are the political party that the electorate trusts most on “economic issues”.
I wonder how many people actually took the full meaning of the question on board.
It is probably a reflection that the words “SDLP” and “trust” are in the public mind.
A kinda default position for SDLP in general.
Sinn Fein scored poorly…the worst of the five main parties. The orange wing of the One Party State (DUP) only managed third place.

Yet the SDLP will look as much to the fact that they were just about the only political party to emerge with any credit from the OTR (On The Runs) Scandal. Mark Durkan turned in a stellar performance and a considerable number of TV viewers will have noted his straight talking against the shiftiness of DUP and Sinn Fein.
And the less said about our pisspoor Minister for Justice the better.
Never was the SF-DUP lapdog more humiliated.
It would take a heart of stone not to laugh at David Ford.

So I think we can expect twenty five threads on Slugger O’Toole about the SDLPs Good News Week.
Or maybe we wont.
It is of course only an opinion poll but Mick, Dimbleby and Sheldon and new boy Doctor Who (he knows a LOT about SDLP…especially in South Belfast….yeah I know) love opinion polls.
All that Norn Iron Life and Times Shite that they are always spoofing about.
So come on Slugger…let’s here it for the SDLP….for once.
You have 364 other days to tell us how great the Alliance Party are.

John Hume…The Only Statesman?

It is of course entirely right and proper that John Hume is honoured in Derry today.
But the Twittersphere is unusually quiet about it all.
I make no apology for saying that John Hume is just about the only Statesman to emerge from the last half century.
Nor do I make any apology for saying that I voted Sinn Fein …occasionally on the principle that they were acting in the interests of me and mine.

Let me be clear. On occasions that I have voted SDLP, I have voted SF as a #2 choice if that choice was available. On occasions, when I voted SF, I have voted SDLP as a second preference.
No other Party can claim to represent my principles or interests as an Irish citizen.

Yet it is almost impossible to LIKE Sinn Fein people.
I have a lot of time for Niall O’Donnghaile, a very decent guy who has been unfailingly pleasant to me on the occasions we have met.
And of course, there are a few Belfast-based SF people, who I knew in very different times…playing football in the Falls, Woodvale, Botanic, Ormeau Parks. I will always regard them as friends.
Yet they have produced no Statesmen. Nobody has risen above narrow self-interest.
Gerry Adams, ….I cant bring myself to LIKE him.
For all their bluster…and I will still be putting a #2 for them on the ballot paper, today’s events in Derry put Sinn Fein in the “halfpenny place”.
And while this might appear that so many years after his retirement, John Hume is still the greatest asset the SDLP have…more properly it means that his LEGACY is the greatest asset the SDLP have.

Of course, it would be wrong to think that John Hume is universally liked.
He is not.
Sinn Fein despise him. If they ever have to pay him tribute, it will be thru gritted teeth.
Hence…they ignore today’s Tribute in Derry.
The Alliance Party hate John Hume. He effectively spiked the guns of LetsGetAlongerism and Liberal Unionists four decades ago.
And any unionist commentator who is still hankering after the days when the “Province” (sic) should have listened to Terence O’Neill will choose not to admit Humes greatness.

Nor will any LetsGetAlongerist message board, lining up to show nationalism in a negative way (twenty plus OTR threads on one such board) be anything other than grudging or nuanced.

It seems right that this was a Good Day for SDLP.
It has actually been a Good Week.

The British…And “Territorial Integrity”

So David Cameron talking about Ukraine and respecting “territorial integrity”.

Ah…like Ireland, India, Ceylon/Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Ghana, Malaya/Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, Kenya, Jamaica, Grenada, Pakistan, St Lucia, Cyprus, Malta…..Malvinas.
You probably see where I am going with this.

Writing On The Wall…Belfast City Airport

I am not a big fan of Belfast City Airport. Just getting to it is a nightmare. And £7.50 for less than two hours parking.
And at 8.30pm on Friday last …it was a ghost town.
No planes leaving until the next morning…I was there to pick up my son…and the feeling of a commuter airport. People leave in the morning and come back at night.
And not much to occupy the waiting time.
The viewing area closed and the bookshop-newspaper shop closed and the Coffee Shop closed at 9pm.

So not much there…but the Tourist Board provide a load of books and leaflets.
Take a look at this.
image

Published by Feirste Thiar…the West Belfast Tourist organisation based in the Gaeltacht Quarter on the Falls Road, it shows thumbnails of the murals in “nationalist” West Belfast.
While many are highly political, some are sporting and cultural while some are of “international” interest.
A few years ago, I noticed that the main Belfast Tourist Office in Donegall Place had a book on Republican monuments in Belfast as well as a leaflet for the Republican Museum at Conway Mill.
So its not entirely surprising that this map is available (free) at the City Airport. Some LetsGetAlongerists are of course appalled at “Terror Tourism” but really there is no point in thinking that the Troubles are not an “attraction”.
Perhaps the only surprise is how easily this has got into the mainstream.
And nobody in Loyalist East Belfast seems to have noticed.

I DID Warn You All About The Czar Of Russia

So…the Crimea.
I suppose you all thought that “Keeping An Eye On The Czar Of Russia” was a reference to the editor of the Skibbereen Eagle who delivered bombastic editorials far beyond his West Cork remit…and that Bloggers (including myself) are pompous men(its nearly always men) who think we are saying something important.

Its like this. Until 1917, Russia was an autocratic empire with “interests” beyond its borders…in the Far East and in Europe.
In the Soviet era, Russia was still an Empire. Not just ruling Ukraine, Georgia and Uzbekistan and Latvia but extending its “influence” into Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and the rest.
Since the break up of the Soviet Union and independence for fourteen republics and the fall of the Berlin Wall meaning that some of the old Warsaw Pact are now in the absurd European Union and even NATO….it was always likely that the Russians would look for a new Czar to re-assert Russian strength.
Russia is still an Empire. Putin is a Czar.

The thing about Imperialism and post-Imperialism is that nations like Russia…and USA, Britain, France, Germany have what they call “interests” in places beyond their borders.
Most people in USA see no problem in successive American governments (Democratic and Republican) operating the Monroe Doctrine which effectively gives them leadership of a continent and the right of veto on just about everything in Central and South America…including Venezuela and Cuba.
And most Russian people see no problem with successive Russian administrations “leading” their sub-continent.
Ukraine has the misfortune to lie on the fault line between three old Empires…Russian, Prussian and Habsburg.
There is alas no end to History.
While Russia was weak, its Baltic republics slipped further out of Russian influence and joined the European Union. And has blossomed economically.
Ukraine with its westward leaning Catholics and its eastward leaning Orthodox ppopulation is in economic chaos…and certainly expected that it would seek closer ties with “Europe” (the Holy Roman Empire of old) and certainly expected that Russia would resist.

“The West” (USA and especially the unelected elite in Brussels) have played this badly.
The Ukraine Spring looks as counter-productive as any other “Spring” of recent years. As the Egyptian Spring had Islamist extremists in its ranks…(the Muslim Brotherhood actually coming to power democratically before the Americans backed a military coup)…so too are fascist extremists in the Kiev crowds.
And frankly the old Soviet Union was good at keeping ethnic tensions in check. Simply put they suppressed minorities.

When the West talks about the territorial integrity of Ukraine…it is shameless bullshitting.
The one word I have not heard recently is …Kosovo.
There can be little doubt that the Muslim province has been treated badly by successive Yugoslav and Serbian regimes. Deliberately marginalised, they have earned the right to secede from their oppressors…any Irish nationalist would empathise.
And quite properly, the West supports Kosovo…against Serbia …ally of Russia.
Yet the ethnic Russians in the Crimea might well feel abandoned by the unelected regime currently governing Ukraine.
The West does not support the Crimeans…which is inconsistent and hypocritical.

John Kerry talks about sanctions. This will send a cold shiver down the spines of Kerry’s incompetent European allies. The lights might well go out all over Europe…Russia supplies the energy after all.

St Pats For All…Except If You’re Irish

It is right and proper that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered people take part in the St Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City.
And right and proper that the Irish people here demonstrate to our American cousins that this kinda discrimination is unacceptable.

Yet here in Norn Iron, we have our own problems with celebrating St Patrick’s Day in those “public, shared spaces” like the City centre in Belfast.

Now at least, in Belfast the parade is legal.
And yet in Downpatrick, Armagh and other places in the North, there will be the inevitable row if someone dares to show up at a parade with the National Flag.
For even on St Patrick’s Day, the National Flag of Ireland is unacceptable to unionists.
Shame on them…but its only to be expected.
Shame too on the LetsGetAlongerists who tell us the National Flag is not…”inclusive” enough. This …from the same mindset that brings us “Orange Fest”, the bizarre attempt to sell Orangeism as a day for us all.
image
Some of our favourite LetsGetAlongerists will attend the American consulate in Belfast to celebrate the Fourth of July. They will also have the hot ticket for the French Consulate on Bastille Day.
If you are in a Doctors Surgery waiting room you will see some of the top LetsGetAlongerists at these functions…just look at the September issue of the Ulster Tatler.
If the LetsGetLongerists had any sense of decency, they would not turn up …because of course the American and French National Days are hardly…”inclusive”. The Stars and Stripes and Le Tricolere will be on show.
And of course quite properly the Great and Good of Belfast LetsGetAlongerism will celebrate with our Indian, Chinese and other residents, on their “Days” to demonstrate their liberal credentials.
Yet the only people in Norn Iron who can be ridiculed and marginalised with impunity are the Irish. All to appease people who hate the Irish nation and all it stands for.
Shame on the LetsGetAlongerists.
Shame on “nationalist” councillors who facilitate it.

Hopefully none of my readers will be upset by the photograph of the National Flag of Ireland. It was being carried in Kiev, Ukraine yesterday. Isnt Freedom a wonderful thing?

“Alias Smith And Jones”…Stormont

If you are as old as I am…you might think that the whole controversy over amnesty/pardon for 187 people sounds a bit familiar.
The early 1970s, there was a popular comedy Western called “Alias Smith and Jones” (BBC2 Monday 8pm).
Starring Pete Duel (initially) and Ben Murphy as…
“Hannibal Hayes and Kid Curry” said the narrator”the two most successful outlaws in the history of the West…and in all the banks and trains they held up, they never killed anyone. This made our two latter day Robin Hoods popular…with everyone except the railroads”
And as the Prologue reminded us each week “of course the Governor cant come right out and give you a pardon”.
“So ….all we have to do is stay out of trouble”.

Interestingly they once met a feisty flame-haired Irish girl in the desert.
“My parents came from Londonderry” said Kid Curry (Jones).
“Londondonderry!!!…they must have been Orange” said the girl.
Great stuff!
But it couldn’t happen in real life…could it?

A Dirty Peace

Once again, Mark Durkan MP gets it right.
“It is a Dirty Peace following a Dirty War”
It is a shame that Mark stood down as SDLP a few years back.
Yes it all makes sense…he has a family man and never at ease at both Stormont and Westminster. But he is a voice we hear too rarely.
