Local Elections: South Belfast

Breaking down the Belfast Council area into four Westminster constituencies, I am looking first at South Belfast.
From some inner city areas such as Ormeau (nationalist) and The Village (unionist), the constituency also includes the leafier middle class areas of Lisburn Road and Malone Road. It also takes in Queens University and the student bed sits in the Holy Land.
So it is…diverse.
The current Westminster MP is Dr Alasdair McDonnell (SDLP Leader), a veteran now in his sixties. He is assumed to get some moderate votes from other parties because the main rival is the DUP.
The six Assembly members come from five different parties…SDLP (McDonnell), DUP, Sinn Fein, UUP and Alliance. The sixth seat is held by SDLP. The final seat in the constituency is regarded as “up for grabs”.
Traditionally this is regarded as good territory for SDLP but in the 1970s the local Catholic population often voted Alliance. Boundary changes and Demographics have now shown that there is a maximum of three nationalist seats in the area. Claire Hanna has now established herself as the leading nationalist vote getter in the constituency.
There have however been signs of Alliance making a comeback here.

Results 2014.
Botanic DEA.
SDLP 1. DUP 1. Sinn Fein 1. Alliance 1. UUP 1.
Balmoral DEA.
SDLP 1. DUP 1. Sinn Fein 1. Alliance 1. UUP.1
Lisnasharragh DEA. (partly in East Belfast)
SDLP 1. DUP 2. Alliance 2. UUP 1.

The Diversity remains obvious. Anyone considering Westminster 2015, would know that SDLP needed tactical votes from Sinn Fein and Alliance to retain the seat.
While SF would be also-rans at Westminster level, Alliance have genuine claims to be a contender. Ironically if SDLP and Alliance are almost equal, it could be that a unionist (there could well be an agreed unionist unity candidate) could take the seat.
There is the Anna Lo factor.
She topped the poll in 2011 but did not have a running mate to fully capitalise on her votes and SDLP retained that sixth seat. She is atypical of Alliance…Hong Kong born, more socially liberal than fellow Alliance members, and seemingly at heart a “nationalist” who views Norn Iron as a colonial legacy.
But just yesterday, Anna Lo announced she would be standing down from politics in 2016. This is not entirely surprising, given her age. She cites being a victim of Racism as being the main factor. She has undoubtedly been the victim of abuse and there is a rising tide of Racism in Norn Iron.
Yet there may be more to it.
Is there a Duncan Morrow factor? Surely the serial LetsGetAlongerist Quango man and with Alliance in his DNA has been handpicked to be a MLA in 2016 and I, for one find it amusing that he lost out to a running mate in the Local Elections. “The best laid plans of mice and men…”.
Will Morrow be the Westminster candidate in 2015? Or (say it aint so!), newly elected COUNCILLOR (Jesus wept!) Paula Bradshaw (Mrs Ian Parsley).
Is there a Naomi Long factor? Anna Lo’s alleged nationalism, would not have played well with Naomi, who has a battle to retain her Westminster seat in East Belfast…against an (assumed) agreed unionist candidate.
Following a high profile start, Anna Lo’s European campaign faltered after that “nationalist and colonial” quote. Fellow Alliance people emphasised their own unionist credentials. I have seen it noted that she did not appear much in public…and certainly that is understandable in view of the racist abuse that she faced.
But ….why hang on until 2016 and the next election?
Why not stand down now and let new man (Morrow) or new woman (Bradshaw…sheesh!) get embedded before the Assembly Elections of 2016?
Is Anna Lo already a semi-detached member of the Alliance Party? If so, the next two years could be interesting.
Yet South Belfast is the very heart of MetroTextual Land, where 97.3% of people are PhD Politics students and tweet to each other on Twitter about it.
The heartland of LetsGetAlongerism and Platform for Change and other nonsense.
It is atypical.
So high profile people like Claire Hanna (SDLP), Mairtin O’Muilleoir (SF), Christopher Stalford (DUP), Chris McGimpsey (UUP) as well as Morrow and Bradshaw will have an eye on 2015 and 2016.
And I would not leave out the Green Party. Good to see Clare Bailey do well but she narrowly missed out.

Local Elections: Belfast

Belfast …the big one.
Enlarged by the inclusion of some Catholic DEAs from Lisburn and some Protestant DEAs from Castlereagh, the consequence was (as it turned out) that nationalists would outvote unionists but that the Alliance Party would hold the balance of power in a “hung” council.

Results.
SF 19. SDLP 7 PBP 1.
DUP 13. UUP 7. TUV 2. PUP 2.
Alliance 8. Greens 1.

SDLP Perspective.
I will be looking at the four Belfast constituencies seperately.
The general observation is DUP lost ground to UUP and smaller parties such as TUV and PUP.
SDLP lost ground in vote share but will be happy to have come back with seven seats.
Alliance will be happy enough with eight seats.
High profile casualties all round.
Lee Reynolds of the DUP lost his seat thru poor vote management.
Maire Hendron of the Alliance Party lost her seat also.
Duncan Morrow (Alliance) will have regarded himself as a certainty to get a seat on the Council but lost put to a lesser known running mate.
Morrow has of course a family history with Alliance but interestingly Paula Bradshaw, whose history with Alliance goes all the way back to….er 2010….and her defection from UUP….she actually won a seat.

On a personal level I am saddened to see Colin Keenan (SDLP) fail to get elected. Boundary changes meant that Lower Falls DEA was abolished so he carried the SDLP banner in Court DEA. A loss to local politics, Colin is one of the good guys.

Local Elections: Newry, Mourne & Down

Effectively made up of Down (Downpatrick) Council and Newry & Mourne. Both Heavily nationalist. Effectively four DEAs are in South Down, two are in Newry-Armagh and one in Strangford.

Results.
SF 14. SDLP 14.
DUP 4. UUP 3. UKIP 1.
Alliance 2.
Independent 3.

SDLP Perspective.
SDLP will be happy. Outscored SF in South Down. Might even be thinking in terms of a third Assembly seat and putting a marker out that Margaret Ritchies Westminster seat is safe.
Less good news in the Newry-Armagh constituency, where SF still has dominance but a lot of SDLP satisfaction in getting a second seat in Slieve Gullion.

Local Elections: Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon

An amalgamation of the three councils.
Banbridge and Craigavon are solidly loyalist. Armagh fairly balanced.
Banbridge and Craigavon are in the Upper Bann constituency.
Armagh is in the Newry-Armagh constituency.

Results:
DUP 13. UUP 12. UKIP 1. Independent 1.
SF 8. SDLP 6.

SDLP Perspective.
In the Armagh DEAs, SDLP outscored Sinn Fein by three seats to two.And with the success in Slieve Gullion will be optimistic about doing well and even gaining a seat from Sinn Fein in the Assembly Election in 2016. Raising the profile of Sharon Haughey or Thomas O’Hanlon by giving one of them a run at Westminster in 2015 would be a good idea.
Things have not been going well for SDLP in Upper Bann and some feel that the Assembly seat, held by Dolores Kelly is vulnerable.
SF outscored SDLP by six seats to three, which is not a good sign but a better sign is that Alliance, including high profile Harry Hamilton (he is a Freddie Mercury impersonator…honestly!) failed to win a seat.
SDLP will also be happy that they have a seat in Lurgan, Craigavon and Banbridge DEAs but Portadown is a hard nut to crack.

Local Elections: Derry & Strabane

Effectively an amalgamation of five Derry DEAs and two Strabane DEAs.
Overwhelmingly Nationalist.

Results.
SF 16. SDLP 10. Ind Rep 4.
DUP 8. UUP 2.

SDLP Perspective
A very bad result for SDLP. A little local difficulty (an internal row) in the week before the Election led directly to a poor performance in one of the Derry DEAs. Perhaps more significantly Independent Republicans, allegedly close to the thinking of “dissidents” gained some seats. This has severely dented SDLPs belief that Derry is the SDLP “jewel in the crown. I think that dissidents getting a foothold will worry Sinn Fein as much.
Heady talk that this is bad news for Mark Durkan in defending his Westminster seat next year but actually he looks safe. He is a bigger name than his Party and will get some tactical votes in a “First Past the Post” style election.
But it is undoubtedly true that SF has now moved to parity with SDLP in party support. That might well effect the Assembly break down (currently SDLP lead SF by three seats to two).
But clearly this is something SDLP have to get a grip on.
Previous internal rows about candidate selection have not harmed SDLP because it had the luxury of dominance. Tnis is no longer the case.
Strabane…SDLP will have hoped for better but only took one seat in the two DEAs. Three candidates (and one victor)in Sperrin DEA looks over optimistic. And a bout of fisticuffs between rival SDLP camps at the Count Centre will have done nothing to dispel the image of a Party at odds with itself. Derg DEA…two candidates, and nobody elected…but a close call.
Strabane is of course in West Tyrone and while clearly the Strabane results are disappointing, they are balanced by the good performances in the. Omagh part of the constituency.
But the lesson here for SDLP is clear. Get a grip….quickly.

Local Elections: Mid Ulster

The new District Council is effectively made up of Magherafelt, Cookstown and Dungannon.
Magherafelt and Cookstown are in the Mid Ulster Constituency as is the Torrent DEA of Dungannon. The other two Dungannon DEAs are in Fermanagh-South Tyrone.

Results.
SF 18.SDLP 6. Independent 1.
DUP 8.UUP 7.

SDLP Perspective.
All Parties will be satisfied. The indications are that there will be no changes at the 2016 Assembly Election. SDLP scored well with a seat in each South Tyrone DEA, which when added to positive results in the Fermanagh area indicate that SDLP is on course to regain an Assembly seat.
SDLP will be disappointed that it narrowly failed to pick up a seat in Moyola DEA but a seat in each of the four Mid Ulster Constituency DEAs indicates no change. SDLP will retain its seat.

Local Elections: Causeway Coast & The Glens

The new council is made up of an amalgamation of four smaller councils, Moyle, Limavady, Ballymoney and Coleraine.

Moyle in North Antrim and Limavady in East Derry had nationalist majorities but nationalists will now be in a minority as Ballymoney (North Antrim) and Coleraine (East Derry) were overwhelmingly unionist.

The Results:

DUP 11. UUP 10. TUV 3. PUP 1.

SF 7. SDLP 6.

Alliance 1. Independent 1.

SDLP Perspective

SDLP will be reasonably pleased that they almost matched Sinn Fein. While beaten by three seats to one by Sinn Fein in Limavady, SDLP convincingly beat SF 3-0 in Coleraine. This means that the SDLP seat in East Derry is safe. Significantly all three of the SDLP councillors in the Coleraine DEAs are women. I expect John Dallat, the current MLA will retire and one of these women will be co-opted to replace him before 2016. We might get a clue as to who this will be, when the 2015 Westminster candidate is selected. Not so good news in North Antrim where SF outscored SDLP by 3-1….this will mean that SF Sssembly seat is safe but not a very good chance of SDLP regaining a seat in North Antrim. Personally disappointed that Donal Cunningham from BaLlycastle lost his seat to running mate.
Donal has been a very active supporter of this Blog

Local Elections: Antrim & Newtownabbey

Essentially this District Council is an amalgamation of four DEAs from Antrim and three from Newtownabbey. It is heavily loyalist.

Results.
DUP 15. UUP 12. TUV 2.
SF 3. SDLP 4.
Alliance 4.

SDLP Perspective.
A good result. Solid performances winning a seat in three Antrim DEAs. And a seat in Newtownabbey. The pleasing aspect will be that Alliance (four seats) and Sinn Fein lost a little ground here.
SDLP lost their Assembly seat in 2011 and will take heart for 2016.
This is David Ford’s home territory so with the likelihood of him stepping down in 2016, Alliance will be a little worried.

Local Elections: Mid & East Antrim

This Council area effectively amalgamates Ballymena, Larne and Carrick Councils.
Unionist-Loyalist heartlands and as the saying goes, keeping “your head as low as a catholic in Larne”
Ballymena is in North Antrim constituency.
Larne and Carrick are in East Antrim.

Results.
DUP 16. UUP 9. TUV 5. UKIP 1.
SF 3 SDLP 1.
Alliance 3.
Independent 2.

SDLP Perspective.
Poor. SDLP did not run any candidates in Carrick and will be disappointed in not taking a seat in Larne. This looks bad for 2016. Sinn Fein did take a seat in Larne (and did not stand in Carrick). SDLP took its sole seat in the Ballymena area and SF took two there.
Alliance are usually the beneficiaries of nationalist reluctance to stand in these areas but dont look to have done as well as they should. The Alliance Assembly seat in East Antrim is still safe. Less so, the Sinn Fein seat.
The North Antrim Sinn Fein seat looks safe. SDLP regaining a seat there looks impossible, even when the nationalist heartland of The Glens are added (The Glens is in the Causeway Council area.)
The erstwhile spiritual home of the DUP is increasingly the spiritual home of Jim Allister’s breakaway TUV. Looks like the TUV could pick up Assembly seats in North Antrim and East Antrim.

Local Elections: Lisburn & Castlereagh

An amalgamation of five DEAs from Lisburn and two from Castlereagh.
Both heavily loyalist.
Lying mostly within the Lagan Valley and South Belfast.

Results.
DUP 20. UUP 8. TUV 1. NI21 1.
SDLP 3.
Alliance 7.

SDLP Perspective.
Some brave souls contested some of the inner Lisburn areas but did not get elected. SDLP will draw some satisfaction that Sinn Fein did not take any nationalist seat in either Glenavy or Castlereagh South.
SDLP got two seats in Castlereagh South which added to good performances in South Belfast will give the party confidence for 2015 and 2016.
SDLP would have hoped for a better platform in Lagan Valley.
