“A Good Week For Global Democracy” (Gerry Lynch)

It is hard to argue with Gerry Lynch, writing on Slugger O’Toole that it has been a good week for Global Democracy.

I dont know how Gerry Lynch feels about the decision that the East Belfast hustings involving only two political parties, the Alliiance Party and DUP.

Gerry Lynch as well as being a number cruncher is a former official of the Alliance Party. Indeed for Westminster 2010, he was the Alliance Party candidate in East Antrim.

As you will see, Slugger O’Toole is only one of the organisers of this event. Another organiser is Lucid Talk , a local polling organisation.

image Indeed Lucid Talk will be conducting a poll of the audience fifteen minutes before the event. Notwithstanding the kindly words of Alan Meban of Slugger O’Toole that “supporters of other parties are welcome”, I cannot see a lot of Sinn Féin, SDLP and Green Party supporters showing up to an event which does not respect them enough to treat them as an equal.

Can we guess that Sinn Féin, Greens and SDLP will not figure much in the Lucid Talk poll? We can probably assume that the result of such a poll will confirm it is a two horse race.

I have written to Lucid Talk to ask if they are happy with this event. I will report any reply. It might even come from …..er Gerry Lynch (the former Alliance Party official and candidate and advocate of Global Democracy) who is shown as a “consultant” on the Lucid Talk website.

More Hypocrisy From Slugger O’Toole

Slugger O’Toole at its worst.

Organising a “General Election” Debate in East Belfast…which only features two of the candidaes standing. Sitting MP, Naomi Long of the Alliance Party and Gavin Robinson of DUP.

The Election itself is effectively a head-to-head between two Parties…Alliance and DUP. They put up a deposit and they are entitledto stand at Election. The Green Party, SDLP and Sinn Féin will also be standing. They put up a deposit also and at least as entitled to have their voice heard.

Not in the view of Slugger O’Toole.

Slugger wants a “focussed debate” with serious challengers. The criteria is that a Party must have 10 per cent of votes cast in the previous election. This qualifies Alliance, DUP and UUP. But UUP are in a shameful pact with DUP.

It is shamefully a Pact that Slugger O’Toole has entered into with Alliance and DUP. The point can and will be made by Slugger that the Greens, SDLP and Sinn Féin cannot win the seat.

Absolutely true. But votes cast for them can influence the result. Certainly the votes for Greens, SDLP and Sinn Féin will be squeezed but as two of the Parties are anti-unionist and one allegedly neutral, it seems more likely that the squeezed votes would benefit Naomi Long than a representative of an Orange supporting and homophobic Party.

Part of the calculation in East Belfast has to be that a DUP candidate benefits from the decision of the UUP to stand aside. The decision of UUP to enter into an electoral pact with DUP has been criticised. I agree. It is shameful.

Part of the calculation in East Belfast has to be that Naomi Long and Alliance would be efit from any decision of “progressive parties” to stand aside. The Greens, SDLP and Sinn Féin are not standing aside but Slugger has oblidged their Alliance friends by making them more irrelevant.

The perceived wisdom is that the Election will be close. It might hinge on the decision of usual Green, SDLP or Sinn Féin voters to vote against the DUP. Slugger has facilitated that by emphasising that it is a straight choice.

Part of the duty of any democratic party is to seek to represent its most marginalised voters…and clearly in East Belfast, nationalists and left-leaning parties are marginalised. It is a credit to Greens, SDLP and Sinn Féin that they put up a candidate. It is a credit to Alliance that they will give their supporters a voice in (say) Mid Ulster.

Little credit then to Slugger O’Toole. We do not know who within the Slugger team dreamed up this formula. And with the lack of transparency that Slugger condemns in others…we wont know.

What we DO know is that on Facebook, Alan Meban promotes the event by pointing out that supporters of other parties are “welcome”. Perhaps in a segregated part of the audience. Rather like black, coloured and mixed race people were allowed to attend rugby matches and cricket matches in South Africa.

Shame on Slugger O’Toole …again.

Poster Boys & Girls…#1 Gerry Kelly (Sinn Féin)

So the Westminster Election 2015 gets underway and with it the Election posters.

image

This one is Gerry Kelly MLA (Sinn Féin, North Belfast). It is on the Antrim Road, in the New Lodge area. It was taken last Thirsday.

This is actually the second poster I have seen this year. The first was Nigel Dodds (DUP, North Belfast) on the Crumlin Road, Belfast. But I saw it from a bus and could not take a photograph.

Competition Time: Design A Paula Bradshaw 2020 Election Poster

Now that your children and grandchildren are at home for Easter and the weather is not too good, you may wish to encourage them to take part in my Blue Peter-style “Design a Paula Bradshaw 2020 Election Poster” competition.

Election posters are usually very traditional affairs but Ms Bradshaw is a revolutionary. Appearing on UUP-Tory posters as their South Belfast candidate in 2010. And appearing on Alliance Party posters in 2015.

So as your children and grandchildren design their posters for 2020, remember that the rules of the competition do not limit them to any one political party.

Good Luck.

Naomi Hits Back!

One of the most bitter election campaigns will be in East Belfast. In 2010, Naomi Long of Alliance took the Westminster seat. It was a surprise. She rode the perfect storm of DUP Scandal and  a divided unionist vote.

The DUP have made it a priority to win back East Belfast…the jewel in their crown. They hit back hard over Alliance taking their fleg down at Belfast City Hall. And Alliance have been the victims of loyalist violence on their offices.

Naomi Long has of course more balls than any of her Alliance colleagues….with the possible exception of Anna Lo. And if Naomi loses East Belfast, she wont be going down quietly.

According to David McCann at Slugger O’Toole…Naomi has been getting some online abuse and has gone public and is reading out the tweets on a video. Presumably she has decided that playing the “victim” card will benefit her campaign.

Let me be clear. I find the abuse of politicians of ANY Party to be an absolute disgrace. The Internet in general and Twitter especially have cheapened political discourse. For about three USA Presidential Elections and maybe four British General Elections, the Internet has been hailed as making a difference to Politics. It probably does…and it is probably negative.

So Naomi …understandably…seeks to turn this to her electoral advantage.

But I could not help notice that Naomi Long has 11,900 followers on Twitter. This indicates that she uses it (or her staff uses it for her) to get her political message across to a large number…a VERY large number of people. Certainly looks like she and/or her staff dont decline a request to “follow” her.

So…perhaps oddly…Naomi Long is following only 325 people on Twitter.

Obviously famous people have more followers than the not-so-famous. It is the “Big Fish” and “Small Fish” thing. Naomi Long seems to be a rather big fish, who is rather more interested in her own opinions than other peoples opinions.

Reading out the mean tweets is a stunt.

The Great Annual Tweet Up…Part Two (Slugger O’Toole)

I could only stay about forty five minutes at the second event on Thursday 26th March. An informal, social event organised by Slugger O’Toole at the Hudson Bar in Belfast City Centre.

To be honest, forty five minutes is the limit of my comfort zone with my fellow Bloggers. So I was actually glad I had somewhere else to be.

When I left, Basil McCrea MLA (NI21) and Máirtín Ó Muilleoir MLA (Sinn Féin) had just arrived and joined some NI21 members and Slugger regulars. Let me emphasise that I am not anti-social but rather I think its better for a Blogger to be at arms-length from the rest of the Blogging community.

It is an odd thing. This Blog is actually quite successful. But the problem with being successful is that I get sucked into the small world of Norn Iron bloggers and politicians. Almost all of the people I encounter are decent people…Chris Lyttle MLA (Alliance) and Chistopher Stalford (DUP) for example. I even like Máirtín Ó Muilleoir MLA (Sinn Féin). Academics like Dr Gladys Ganiel and Professor John Brewer are patently decent. Journalists like Alex Kane.

I find it harder to engage with people I like than people I dont like. Thankfully there are a lot of Norn Iron politicians and wannabee politicians who are impossible to like. I just hope I never meet them.

Yet I think my aversion to such socialising runs deeper than “personality”.

David McCann promoting the event on the Slugger O’Toole message board…describes it as an event for POLITICOS.

The question must be asked. What is a POLITICO? And is it flattering to be called a POLITICO?

As far as I can make out…a POLITICO is someone who expresses an interest in Politics but doesnt actually DO anything. A political anorak. A nerd.

It seems unflattering. Rather like Leonard, Sheldon and Rajesh wearing Star Trek uniforms at Comic Con. But then Howard did actually go into Space. So the Slugger event is essentially Comic Con for political nerds. While the highlight of the Slugger event was to be a “tweet up” during the David Cameron and Ed Miliband TV non-debate…people really interested in Politics were knocking doors on behalf of SDLP, DUP, UUP, Sinn Féin, Green, Alliance and TUV…and actually doing the nitty gritty of Politics such as preparing a case for a Tribunal on Housing Benefit.

So the Slugger event was at best a “get together” for people with a similar interests. Or at worst it was Fantasy Politics. Rather like teenagers like a “kill or be killed” computer game but would run a mile from being drafted to a real war in Syria. Rather like teenagers play “football” computer games like FIFA 2015 but get their mothers to write notes to a teacher to excuse them from Gym Class.

So really the Slugger Tweet-Up is little or nothing to do with real Real Politics.

As I have often said, the Norn Iron Blogging World is essentially a Belfast suburban world. The Metro-Textuals inside the “beltway” could not find their way beyond Lisburn, Glengormley, Helens Bay and Shaw’s Bridge without a very expensive Sat Nav.

In effect, Slugger O’Toole reflects this. The Slugger “agenda” is really just the extension of the Metro-Textual mindset.

The Great Annual Tweet Up…Part One (NICVA)

image  image J

Thursday 26th March 2015. NICVA, Duncairn Gardens, Belfast. Part One of the Great Annual Tweet Up. A joint event organised by NICVA and Slugger O’Toole.

I am never very sure what NICVA is. On Thursday, I arrived about forty minutes early and had plenty of opportunity to find out. There were brochures in the Reception area but I was sitting down and I couldnt be arsed picking up a brochure. They operate from a new building in a business park in Duncairn Gardens in North Belfast. As is often the case with business parks and shopping malls and road building….the landscaping provides a “fire break” between the two tribes in Norn Iron. So NICVA is on the peace line between the nationalist “New Lodge” and loyalist “Tigers Bay”.

NICVA is one of those organisations …cynics would say….which seems lavishly funded to merely exist rather than actually DO anything.

It is “cross-community” and in Norn Iron terms exempt from criticism. Its supporters would say that the Norn Iron Council for Voluntary Associations is an umbrella organisation for the multitude of voluntary organisations which exist here. Indeed its main purpose seems to be to provide “training” for voluntary groups.

It is a normal part of the political discourse here…especially on the political “right” to say that the public sector…Health, Education, Civil Service etc is “bloated” but few criticise the voluntary sector as “bloated”. Indeed Community activism isone of those things which cannot be criticised. Especially if the “cross-community” tag is used.

Voluntary Organisations includes charities and campaign groups. As long as NICVA is providing support and training, these groups know where their bread is buttered. Because these groups are diverse and range in size, it is often the case that the spokespersons for the bigger and better organised groups become personalities…”players”….in their own right. The extent to which they are becoming “players” on behalf of the groups they represent or have one eye on a bigger and better career is possibly problematic.

NICVA provides the platform to “network”. Some “players” use the opportunity rather well. Networking is a “big fish, small fish” type of thing. The small fish swim near the big fish hoping to benefit. Sometimes the big fish eat the small fish.

So Thursday was all about Networking. NICVA-Slugger O’Toole hosting a discussion on Social Media…specifically the use of Twitter to get your message across.

The afternoon was hosted by Mark Mallet of Ulster Television. It was a one hour panel discussion. I cant recall the names of the panelists. Four or five “success” stories. people who had successfully used Twitter to campaign or whatever. I could not warm to them. The overall impression was that these had recently been “small fish” who had succeeded to the extent of swimming with “bigger fish”. Being on the panel was the confirmation of their success. Not so very different from “born again Christians” telling a tele-evangelist of the blessings GOD had bestowed on them.

The audience were provided with a “hashtag” and invited to “tweet”. Those audience members, who tweeted were rewarded with seeing their tweet published on a giant screen in the room. Few of Norn Iron’s Golden Halo in attendance. Patrick Corrigan, the Amnesty Man was there. He tweeted and even asked an old fashioned question of the panel. Good to see Mr Corrigan taking a break from carrying “Je Suis…..” placards at Belfast City Hall.

Quintin Oliver was unable to attend but generously took time to “tweet” his best wishes from an even more important event.

A curiousity was a tweet from a non-entity called “Sean-Korb” (see pic above)  who stated that he had one follower on Twitter and thought this was below average. This made the audience laugh and Mr Mallett ran about the room trying to locate “Sean” before deciding that Sean probably wasnt in the room. Audience members suggested that “Sean” should probably have a pic on his profile. Audience members were encouraged to add him..  “Sean” tweeted that he was in the room and would not be putting up a pic.

It dawned late on the audience that “Sean” was in fact….a wind up merchant, who was way off message. I encourage you not to speculate on Seans identity.

The workshops….one conducted by Brian O’Neill from Slugger. Actually quite good …an overview of how to use your website to campaign. And a reminder that the voluntary sector does good work. The lady who runs a new “pet charity” finding good homes for cats and dogs, whose owners have terminal illness…good luck to her.

And a second workshop on the mechanics of Twitter. I have THREE dormant Twitter accounts. The word count on this post is…779…and will be just over 800, when I finish it. I am not the kinda person who can limit himself to 140 characters in a “tweet”.

Tweets encourage one-liners. As “Sean_Korb” put it “Facebook is for my Friends….Twitter is for my Enemies”.

It is “Big Fish” and “Small Fish”. Success on Twitter is having people follow YOU. It is not about following other people.

Thus….Quintin Oliver who describes himself as a “lobbyist, activist and change agent” has almost 4,000 followers but only 1,600 people are followed by Quintin Oliver. Quintin is a success.

Eamonn Mallie is followed by 24,000 people and follows 4,000. He is a success.

Mick Fealty is followed by 9,000 and follows 1,000. Success.

Dr Who….David McCann is followed by 3,000 and follows 1,000.

I would be surprised if they dont follow each other. They will probably tell you that Twitter is democratic and egalitarian but they dont seem to value other peoples opinions (the Small Fish) ass much as the Small Fish value their opinions. It’s just too cosy for me.

I have three dormant Twitter accounts. I only ever used it to promote this Blog. And I think the most followers, I ever had on any account was 130. I just dont like Twitter. I dont like ….compromising my opinions ….and I dont like compromising myself.

There are two types of people in Norn Iron. The “Moved and Shaken” and the “Movers and Shakers”. Selling your soul for a “re-tweet”, “like”, “link” or “share” by the Important or Self-Important just isnt worth it.

I Beg Your (Royal) Pardon

So Gerry Kelly MLA is the proud owner of a “Royal Pardon”. Who knew? Who guessed? If he is “proud” of his pardon, he has been remarkably modest about it. In fact he never mentioned it. It just turned up in the News today…in the context of those OTR (On The Run) Letters undermining Justice. Lets not forget that the British Government and Judiciary have been undermining Justice for decades….Birmingham Six, Guildford Four, Maguire Seven, Bloody Sunday….and the treatment of Victims post-Good Friday Agreement is a further example of Justice denied.

As a republican…Irish and global…I struggle with the concept of Royalty. For me the People are sovreign and on the small piece of the planet on which I live…the Irish People are sovreign.

There has always been ambiguity. I was born in a (British) National Health Service hospital in Belfast. My father, a chronically ill man from his early forties was a recipient of British Welfare. I suppose I should be grateful and yet I am not. As the unionist jibe of the 1960s would have it…we wer loyal to the “Half Crown” but not loyal to “The Crown”.

But in September 1969, I had to make my first compromise. I got a job aged 17 with Belfast Corporation as it was then called. Monday 29th September to be precise. The dozen or so new recruits were sat in the City Hall Council Chamber and we all had an Oath of Allegiance to sign. It seems extraordinary to think that this was a requirement of employment in Norn Iron Councils at the time. It was NOT a requirement in London or Manchester or Livverpool.

Why did our local Stormont unionist Government insist on it? Did they really think that Catholic (nationalist) employees in local councils would be more loyal as a result? I doubt it. Clearly there has always been an element of “absolutism” among nationalists. Some would never sign such an oath and effectively disbar themselves from public sector employment, settling for working in the private sector. But I never knew a republican-nationalist so uncompromising that he would never accept unemployment or sickness benefit.

Let me emphasise that I am not ridiculing republicans-nationalists who accepted their entitlement from the British State. Rather, I want to make a point that we all had to compromise to some extent.

Let me also emphasise that many of those new Belfast Corporation recruits on 29th September 1969 made a compromise. Some, including myself turned the “Oath” over so that I simply affirmed my allegiance to Mrs Windsor. I did not involve GOD. No doubt the folks in the Personnel Department marked our cards as Catholics who did not compromise…enough.

But an Oath taken under Coercion or indeed Incentive such as employment has no meaning. And yet, I occasionally did get hassle from republicans in West Belfast about “taking the Queens shilling” as they put it. More so after I became (briefly) a Norn Iron civil servant (oath required). Indeed I recall being cross-examined in 1971 when I had my first real girlfriend. Her father …a republican…did the “Queens Shilling” thing. What does a 19 year old guy do? I decided not to mention the faded photograph of a male relative in British Army uniform on his wall. Queens Shilling…my arse!

Occasionally a later career would take me into Court…a British Court…and I was always prepared as a witness to affirm as a non-Christian, rather than involve my GOD in a solemn oath in a British Court. It was my own little compromise.

Of course, Republicans charged with serious offences in the 1970s routinely refused to recognise the (British) Court. Routine pro-forma speeches from the Dock “as an Irish Republican, I do not recognise the jurisdiction of…..” Yes….but that is kinda absolutist and defeatist. If the Republican thought that there was a reasonable case of getting off or if instructed by a superior to declare “Not Guilty”, he/she would have done so. Not absolute.

And I daresay that a Republican who was harmlessly riding a bicycle and hit by a reckless car driver might happily go to court to rightfully claim his/her compensation.

It is all a matter of making compromises with principles.

Benefits. Employment. Criminal Court. Civil Court.

So ….Sinn Féin ridicule SDLP because SDLP MPs take an oath of allegiance at Westminster. SDLP claim it is merely a routine to allow the to better represent those who elect them. Sinn Féin take the view that the “oath” is a step too far and that constituents can be just as easily represented by MPs (currently five) who dont take their seats at Westminster.

Taking an oath of allegiance to Mrs Windsor is of course a compromise but is it a big deal. The Scottish Nationalist Party have no difficulty. Nor do committed English republicans like Dennis Skinner MP (Labour). Increasingly the parade of MPs taking the oath on the first day of a new Parliament is amusing as many republicans go thru the motions and some like Skinner (The Beast of Bolsover) have a little prologue or gesture which indicates a lack of obvious sincerity. Compromise.

Sinn Féin present it as a great issue of Principle. Not least Gerry Kelly MLA, who is standing as a candidate in North Belfast. If elected, he wont take the oath or sit in Westminster.

Does Gerry undermine his own position by accepting a “Royal Pardon”. I doubt that Mrs Windsor woke up in Buckingham Palace and wondered if she should give Gerry Kelly her forgiveness. It is a Government thing. It was in the interests of the British Government to give Gerry a pardon. And in the interests of Sinn Féin to accept it. And in the interests of both to accept it.

The problem with Principle is that it can all look just a bit silly at times. Although they never took their seats in the British House of Commons, Gerry Adams (West Belfast) and Martin McGuinness (Mid Ulster) had to resign to stand for election to the Irish Parliament or to concentrate on the Assembly.

But “resignation” is not that simple. It involves a traditional and bizarre nonsense of applying for a “Crown” office and self-disqualification from Parliament. Thus Gerry resigned and the authorities in Parliament went thru the ritual of appointing him as Steward of the Barony of Northstead…or some such nonsense.

Oh the Joy on Slugger O’Toole….Gerry Adams takes a Crown Office. Just how many threads there were on Slugger (especially initiated by the absurd Baker Boy) I have no idea but they did enjoy it.

Of course Gerry DID get his “Royal Pardon”. How exactly does a “Royal Pardon” work. Does a supplicant write to the Norn Iron Office? I have no idea. Back in 1685, the Duke of Monmouth was defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor and brought before James II in London….and threw himself at the royal feet, sobbing and begging for mercy. Thats how it was back then. Anyway it didnt work. He was executed in a very clumsy and brutal way.

Yet it is Election Season. And surely SDLP need to use the “Royal Pardon” issue to embarras Sinn Féin. I dont begrudge them the compromise. But I think a Republican accepting a “royal pardon” IS a compromise. But I do begrudge them standing on the high moral ground of Principle. You cant have it both ways.

And yet for some years now, that is exactly what Sinn Féin have been doing. Having it both ways. I do not think that a SDLP Leader would have escaped ridicule from the uber-republicans if he/she had been as fawning to Mrs Windsor as Martin McGuinness.

So at the very least, I hope SDLP candidates use this issue. It should be something that new candidates like John Coyle, Daniel Wray McCrossan, Malachy Quinn, Gerry Mullan, Justin McNulty and Margaret Anne McKillop should be bringing up.

And in TV Debates or in the Assembly, the message should be hammered home. Just throw it in there. Cough and say “Pardon me….to quote Gerry Kelly”. Or “I beg your pardon….no offence Gerry”.

Sinn Féin are certainly not as absolutist as they like to pretend.

“A Tweet, A Tweet….My Kingdom For A Tweet”

So it turns out that “King Richard III” last seen alive in 1485 is ….dead. This qualifies as News.

I am a Republican and I dont understand Monarchy.

Clearly, the body found buried in a car park in the city of Leicester is that of Richard. Contemporary History states that after being brutally killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field, his body was stripped of all clothing and thrown over a horse and led into Leicester by a Yorkist herald.

Accounts say that his head banged off the castle walls and that it was subject to some indignity.

Well, a Channel Four documentary last night followed the story of the post-mortem and the DNA shows it to be Richard. As it turns out, he had multiple wounds but killed by a blow to the head. The post-death wounds included a stab wound in his arse….which is perhaps one of the indignities that the history references.

But…..the whole “burial of a king” thing….the gun carriage, the military going thru Leicester and Bosworth. …was it all necessary?

Well yes and no. Richard was a king or a usurper. They all were kings or usurpers. And for the purposes of English tradition and continuity, it is important that “official” English History records him as a Usurper.

Thats how English History works. The “continuity” of Monarchy does not actually exist. It changes to suit the needs of the time. Thus Williamof Orange is NOT a Usurper and neither is George I and the Hanoverian Dynasty. But Usurpers who become Legitimate need Legitimate monarchs to become “Pretenders”…..Old and Young, James II, his son James and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

But what was today all about? However absurd, Monarchy needs a narrative. And it needs an involement of the Terminally Gullible….the crowds that lined the route.

Once again, the Establishment needs something….whether its James Bond meeting Elizabeth Windsor and saving the Olympic Games in London….and “royal” marriages, “royal” births, “royal” funerals.

If there isnt one…..make one up.

Dog Crap….The Media Steps In

First of all, it is almost impossible to explain the word “defecate” to your grandchildren, without mentioning the word “shite”.

Anyway, Newry Council has commissioned a commercial to highlight the anti-social problem of “dog fouling” in the city. The theme is that a dog owner is seen walking his dog and the man is seen to crap in the street. The tagline is that “you wouldnt crap in the street, why would you let your dog do it?”

Is it offensive? Well UTV News conduct interviews on the street. Is it offensive?

I suppose it is all a matter of perspective. Dog fouling IS a problem. And I should point out that FitzjamesDog never goes for a walk without his designated walker being fully equipped with a pooper scooper and plastic bag.

On the other hand, every “Twelfth” in July members of the Orange Order and their camp followers urinate and defecate along the route of their annual Belfast parade. It annoys the residents of Lisburn Road. It seems anti-social.

Perhaps a commercial should be made.

There is of course a difference. Dog Fouling is anti-social. But an Orange Order parade is traditional….and it’s….cultural.
