Henry Thornton-Allan McVittie

As many readers will know, I have often referenced the Ballymurphy Massacre on this Blog.

I saw that …or more accurately, I saw some of it take place before my eyes. I wont forget him. But what really gets under my skin is that it (and indeed other incidents) changed my attitude to life. Nothing has the right to change who I am.

For the record, other incidents include McGurks Bar, Bloody Sunday, Claudy Massacre, Bloody Friday.

Immediately before Ballymurphy, a man from South Armagh, Henry Thornton was shot dead on Springfield Road Mr Thornton was shot dead by a Paratrooper who alleged that the car in which Mr Thornton was travelling had backfired.

Much is of course lost in the fog of war. What cant be lost is that FORTY FIVE YEARS after Mr Thornton was killed, the identity of his killer was publicly identified as Sgt Allan McVittie.

Nor can it be lost that the Parachute Regiment terrorised the people of West Belfast in the later part of 1971. They frightened me…and almost five decades that still hurts. For me, it was not much more than petty insults and indeed I was almost as afraid of other regiments.

The Paras, Black Watch, the Inglorious Gloucesters, the Green Cowards were to be frank ….bastards. In the days before cell phones and 24 Hour media, their deeds go unrecorded. Except of course in their own “regimental” history.

Some say that the prosecution of soldiers after so long is wrong. It is too long ago. Justice delayed is Justice denied. But it is not just nationalists in West Belfast who talk about the past. Conservative MP, “Colonel” Bob Stewart “DSO” (for services in the Balkans….a British hero says he was a “kind of torturer in Northern Ireland”.

Some say it was wrong to name Sgt McVittie as Mr Thorntons killer. Mr McVittie died in 2007. I have no sympathy for this view.

The Quisling Quango

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the possibility of the ultimate Quango…a Quisling Quango to run Norn Iron during Direct Rule. I think I might have described the participants as the usual hangers on from civic society, academia etc.

I may have given the impression that I see such people in a very negative light and might even hold them in total contempt. Nothing could be further from the truth. I would welcome our unelected alien overlords as they are clearly superior to mere mortals.

I notice over on Slugger O’Toole, an academic is floating the idea of “hiring in talent” in the event of the main parties not being able to agree to work together.

These concepts are unrelated.

“Talk Like Donald Trump” Year

Reading friends posts on various platforms, there seems a genuine concern among anti-Trump people. How far can they go in protesting or accepting him as President.

Most are in some way minimalist. Understandably, they are uncomfortable with Protest. Understandably, they are uncomfortable with continuing as normal.

Donald Trump lost the popular vote. There are unanswered questions about Russian involvement in the campaign. Ther is outrage at the demeanour and nature of the man elected. And even while he is in the Oval Office, he complains about Voter Fraud. He alleges that millions of “illegals” voted against him. It is contrary to all the evidence…and plainly his own aides dont believe this crap. Nor do mainstream Republicans like Paul Ryan and Lindsay Graham.

My friends tell me that in terms of policy, Vice President Mike Pence is no better than Trump.

But there is a point where self-preservation takes over.

There WILL be a Palace coup. Trump willbe forced out of office. It wont be by nice people wearing pink hats. The Republican “establishment” will make him an offer he cant refuse…they will be dragged down by mid-term elections.

The extent to which American leaders including celebrities distance themselves from Donald Trump will be the story of the next year. And of course, the American people.

And indeed Trump will be anxious to legitimise himself further. Netanyahu and Theresa May will pay court to him in the Oval Office and talk about special relationships but just as important, his aides in the White Office will be drawing up lists of countries to visit.

Will an Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland) go to the White House on St Patrick’s Day to celebrate Irish-American relations. Maybe Trump would like to visit Scotland….can you really see Nicola Sturgeon (the First Minister) enjoying that.

Can the parents of school kids in California and New York and Connecticut, who are due to go to Washington DC to tour the White House say “no its inappropriate while Trump is President” . Or can those bus loads of school kids go wearing pink hats ….where they will meet up with kids from Georgia, Oklahoma and Utah.

It is a simple enough choice….Protest or Acceptance.

For a man with a giant ego, nothing seems to affect him …except Ridicule.

Which is why “Talk Like Donald Trump” (you saw it here first) is a good idea. We already have “Talk Like a Pirate” …..which is only a day in September.

But the constant daily ridicule of people talking in that bizarre cadence and odd choice of words…that would be interesting.

In fact people are chameleon like and will probably start doing it in an involuntary manner. They will…yes really….and it will be so wonderful ….lemme tell you …so wonderful. We all have words. …the best words. And we can make Mexico pay for our words.

LetsGetAlongerism…USA Style

Since 2010, I have ranted and raved (in a relatively sane way) about the heresy of LetsGetAlongerism. My warnings have fallen on deaf ears but I continue to tilt at these windmills.

Indeed LetsGetAlongerism is a giant octopus spreading its testicles (see Footnote #1) into USA.

Trump in the White House means its “Make Your Mind Up” Time.

Arguably the Media thought HIllary Clinton would win and and needed a close contest to keep Ratings high. Maybe a lot of Americans thought a narrow Hillary victory was the least bad option and that the American establishment could be given a scare.

Or maybe it is about how the Media handles Elections. “Balance” is more important than “Fact”. No Media really challenged the “birth certificate” nonsense.  No journalist said this is a blatant lie and walked out of an interview.

Donald Trump was hiding in plain sight. There was enough to condemn him from an early stage. “The Roast of Donald Trump” (see my Blog) was on record and yet the Media ran with the “hot mic” leak before the Election.

The Entertainment industry and the Media industry both built up Donald Trump and in the wake of his Election seem confused about how to bring him down…or even if it is appropriate. Whose President is he anyway?

Should it be a case of Hail to the Chief or a case of proclaiming that the consensus is broken. Business as usual or Hardball.

How Obama could bring himself to shake hands with Trump is beyond me. How the Clintons could attend the Inaugeration lunch and stand to order when the new President singled out his defeated rival for praise.

No rhetoric about Birth Certificates. No chanting “lock her up” and of course no release of Trump tax returns.

And the Media still files into the Press Room and takes their designated seats. They are about as likely to rock the system as Madonna, the worlds least likely revolutionary.

Yet I was too hard on Celebrities. Sometimes when they act like ordinary people, they are more use than being on a platform. So some like Melissa Benoist (Supergirl….she carried the best poster), Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek) and Whoopi Goldberg (also Star Trek) simply being part of the Womens March was enough.

Oddly in the last episode of Supergirl I watched, the President of the United States was a woman. “Supergirl” even said she didnt like “that guy”.

Yet there is a lesson here for Hollywood. The talent in front of and behind camera is mostly “liberal”. And shows are set in the big cities…Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York…mostly blue states. This of course does not mean that the police, lawyers and the superheroes are overwhelmingly Democrat….but has “Middle America” got a point when it says that their views are not shown on television?

Have we in Europe been conned or conned ourselves into thinking USA (despite swings from Republican to Democrat) is actually a more decent place than it actually is?

Next week we will see blue -state Patriots play red-state Falcons in red-state Texas. Maybe the fans who can afford to attend are Republicans and no doubt Trump will make a cameo appearance via Video. Who sings the anthem? Who is the half-time entertainment.

We might well see Meryl Streep pick up another Oscar in six weeks time. We might see her peers in LaLa Land give her a standing ovation for some tearful Trump-bashing and we might see Shaun Hannity condemn her on Fux News.

If protesting Trump is serious, then it needs to be 24/7. Business as Usual is LetsGetALongerism.

So….does American TV need to be more overtly “political”.

The “Blue Bloods” in the Reagan family….Trump or Clinton (I understand Tom Sellek is a Republican).

Detective Olivia Benson from “SVU” …Trump or Clinton?

Leonard Hofstedder from blue-state New Jersey? Sheldon Cooper  and Penny from red-state Texas and Nebraska? Is Howard Wolowitz for a one-state or two-state solution in the Middle East? Will Raj Koothapalli  be deported?

On “Criminal Minds” is David Rossi a Trump supporter? Is Dr Spencer Reid a Clinton voter?

Over on “Modern Family” are Cam and Mitch attemding anti-Trump rallies. Is Manny getting deported? Are they building a wall around Gloria?

On “The Middle” set in Indiana, did Mike and Frankie Heck put up posters for Hilary or are they raising a can of beer to celebrate Mike Pence as Vice-President? Patricia Heaton is (I understand) a Republican.

This is all actually important.TV is not reflecting that USA is hopelessly polarised. Anyone with a Facebook account knows this. Is TV (drama and comedy) the only place where Politics does not happen. If so….it is a lie.

Hype about Revolution is just nonsense. But if people are serious about Protest, they need to find a plan. That is difficult…people who work in a government office in Providence, Rhode Island cannot start wearing pink as some kinda badge.

Nor can teachers, nurses and small business owners suddenly become partisan.

But sooner or later the crocheted pink hats need to outnumber the red baseball hats. The Nasty Women bumper stickers need to be as common a sight as the Make America Great bumper stickers.

Will LetsGetAlongerism win?

***Footnote #1…..some forty five years ago the merger of Belfast and “rural” bus companies was opposed by a Belfast unionist councillor who warned that “Ulsterbus is a giant octopus spreading its testicles (sic) all over Norn Iron”.

Pretty In Pink?

So Donald Trump is President of the United States for a whole day …and the World survived. I am largely indifferent. He is certainly not MY President and I have never believed that Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Carter or anyone else is Leader of the Free World. I find that phrase insulting.

My plans for Nuclear War are the same as always. As the nuclear dust drifts over Ireland, I will close the windows. If it gets really bad, I will paint a red cross on the roof and pretend I am living in a hospital.

The Winner of the 2016 Election is destined to be a one term President and I suppose the good news is that the Democrats will win the mid-terrms and get the White House in 2020…maybe for more than two terms.

It wasnt supposed to be like this. Social Media was supposed to make electorates smarter…but that has not happened.

Yet there is stuff I dont understand….”Build That Wall”, “Lock Her Up”, “Fake News”, “Drain the Swamp”.

Whether or not Trump keeps any election promise is one thing. Whether his supporters care is another thing.

Yesterday, Trump saluted Hillary Clinton at a lunch in the White House. She is not going to jail after all.

One of the reasons that she lost was that women did not vote for her. At least  the ones who could tell she is a phoney didnt vote for her.

Yet seemingly today, Hillary’s kinda woman was marching in Washington and other American cities. Apparently Madonna is leading a revolution….at least I can understand American women marching. But I cant understand the copy cat women marchers in Paris, Berlin, London, Dublin, Belfast etc.

While we might laugh at  Donald Trump praising the fairness of Fux News…..did you notice tonight that CNN News anchor wearing pink….and the BBC News anchor wearing pink.

Sheesh if I know anything about women…and I dont….turning up to a party wearing the same colour is something they get annoyed about. But obviously it was unplanned because CNN and BBC are neutral.

Reagan talked about “trickle down economics”. It was nonsense of course. But maybe this is “trickle down revolution”. But I cant see Hillary supporters as being “revolutionaries”. Certainly Hillary , the friend of Wall Street is no revolutionary.

Yes…some of yesterdays protestors will stay with it. But they need to start whining that Hillary lost. They need to expand the demographic of Protest and sign up the women AND the men who actually voted for Trump.

It will take a year for Trump’s blue collar support to realise their mistake. But …they WILL.

RHI & Budgies

I stopped breeding Budgies in 2012. I wonder if I missed out on getting my shed and aviary heated thru this RHI scheme. I am not sure if Budgies are classed as “poultry”. Moy Park never showed much interest.

I wonder if it is too late to make a claim.

No Connexion To The Poultry Industry

For the record, I would like to clarify that I have no connexion to the “poultry industry”. I am an occasional visitor to KFC.

Thank you.

Claire Bailey MLA…Strong Silent Type

I first met Claire Bailey in 2006 when she successfully canvassed me to vote for her as Mature Students Officer at Queens University.

I never had her down as the “strong SILENT type” so I am surprised that she has taken a vow of silence since entering the Assembly as Green Party MLA for South Belfast.image

While it is perfectly possible for a MLA to be highly capable without actually speaking in the Assembly chamber, it is surely inadvisable to spend eight months in the Assembly without actually speaking.

Still nice that she got to say something out loud once…even if it was only on the day that Stormont actually collapsed.

Whether the Greens consider endorsing her for the upcoming election (or replacing her with John Barry who is always talking about something) I cant say…but it is rather obvious that rival parties will bring The Silent Green up on the doorsteps.

The Roast Of Donald Trump

It is funny how I can sit on the couch at midnight, with the TV remote in my hand….and flick thru channels, 101, 102, 103….all the way to QVC at 650 and find nothing to watch. Hundreds of channels. Why do I even have SKY? And last night, I found the “Roast of Donald Trump”.

It is hard to explain a “Roast”. It is a bit like your brother’s “best man” speech at your wedding, being handed over to eight or ten professional 21st century comedians…all of whom are exceptionally rude and unpleasant.

The evolution of Comedy is a strange thing to watch. TV in the 1960s was dominated by ex Music-Hall veterans. In the 1970s, it was racist and sexist dinosaurs from working mens clubs. In the 1980s, it was graduates from universities …alternative comedians who dominated. But really since then, it has been a race to the bottom. An Internet generation has brought us back to vulgarity. Sexism, Racism, Homophobia dressed up as post-modern irony.

Donald Trump’s Roast…. seemingly the Roasters  and the celebrities in the audience pay a lot of dollars (to charity) to insult and/or poke fun and/or laugh at the Roastee, who is deemed to be a “good sport”. So Donald Trump was the Roastee in 2011. His wife Melania and daughter, Ivanka are in the celeb audience…well to be honest, the only other celeb  I recognised was Ice T.

The Roasters …only some were known to me. Seth McFarlane, the unfunny man behind “Family Guy”, Larry King, Snoopy Snoopy Dog Doggy, Marlee Matlin (the deaf actress who won an Oscar) and Whitney Cummings.

A lot of the “roasting” was mutual…each Roaster was himself/herself roasted for a perceived character flaw. Among them….McFarlane was told by Snoopy Dog Man that “Nxxxxxx dont  like the Cleveland Show”. Larry King was roasted for his age and divorces (eight!!!!), the audience was told that it was a diverse panel which included “a murderer, a drug addict, a thief…and some white people”, Marlee Matlin was called the “C” word …the alleged joke being that she could not hear it. And Whitney Cummings “I have known her since she was a gleam in the eye of the man who raped her mother” has given so much to the world of Entertainment “but mostly herpes”.

Now I find this humour to be deeply offensive but the Roasters demonstrated that they had no dignity or (in their terms) were “good sports” by laughing excessively at every alleged joke made about them.

Of the others who I didnt know, an Italian-American actress-comedian was roasted for seemingly being sexually permissive with both men and women and every conceivable combination. Some other comedian was the subject of a running gag that he was ugly. And some reality star from “Jersey Shore” was ridiculed for having no talent whatsoever.

To be fair, there were some genuine funny moments….someone said the first caller to a Larry King Show was Alexander Graham Bell. It was noted that “Jersey Shore” was being filmed on location in Italy which was a sneaky way of deporting the cast. Looking at his watch, one Roaster noted that the star of “Jersey Shore” was just about to start his fifteenth minute of fame.

So in among the alphabet soup of N, C, F and P words, there was some actual funny lines.

The Guest of Honour was Donald Trump …2011 version…a man who had announced he would be a candidate for US President. The Roasters did not seem to take it very seriously. I am not entirely sure that Trump did.

So….Trump sat there as the Roasters made little speeches, which ridiculed him as much as fellow Roasters. Jokes about Eastern European hookers, people on stage being higher than any building Trump had built, how when reaching orgasm both Trump and Melania scream “Donald!!!!!!”, sexual potency “get your wrinkled old penis off me!”, evicting black people from houses to construct a hotel, “Donald Trump wants to be President….I look forward to that assassin…..oh I mean inaugeration”……and one Roaster noted that he had a lot in common with Trump “we both fantasise about your daughter”.

And much more in the same vein.

Yet Donald Trump…reality star, billionaire….sat thru it all with a fixed grin. A “good sport”. At the end,Seth  McFarlanesaid that whatever about being President he would always be “King of New York City”.

The thing that struck me most was that whatever the politics of Donald Trump in 2011 and whatever the politics of the 21st century comedians….the real point was that Donald Trump was one of them and these entertainers were at one with Donald Trump. Hooray for Hollywood.

Yet this show has been in the public domain since 2011. Almost six years. And Trump surrounded by and revelling in the company of foul mouthed comedians was hardly the kinda thing that would have endeared him to Republican Christian evangelicals. Nothing seemed off limits…not even references to his wife and daughter…or broad hints at sexual misbehaviour.

And this begs the question why a leaked “hot mic” video of Trump was seized on by Clinton supporters before the election and why Trump is unhappy about Internet references to Melania and Ivanka.

And it further begs the question as to why Trump tweets ill-tempered comments about the untalented Hollywood elite.

I do not know whether Trump’s great friends, Seth McFarlane, Snoopy Snoopy Doggy Dog, Larry King, Marlee Matlin, Whitney Cummings and the rest are going to the Trump Inaugeration. Maybe they are not invited. Maybe they are boycotting it. Attending it, would certainly give the “Jersey Shore” Guy another few minutes of Fame.

Of course I dont know if these celebs and the celeb audience giving Donald Trump a standing ovation actually voted for Trump or Clinton . But he was getting the ovation for the lifestyle excesses that Hollywood and Democrats now condemn.

A bizarre exercise in mutual hypocrisy.

So Farewell Then Tristram Hunt

You are probably as devastated as I am to learn that Tristram Hunt, Labour MP for Stoke Central has resigned to become Curator of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Apparently the appointment had to be rubber-stamped by Theresa May which means the Leader of the Tory Party knew that there would be a by-election in Stoke before the Jeremy Corbyn, Leader of the Labour Party.

So basically Tristram Hunt is not really a team player.

If Labour has a “north of England” problem, it might be something to do with the likes of Hunt, Yvette Cooper , various Milibands, not to mention Mandelson and Tony B Liar being gifted safe northern seats.

Hunt, a Remainer on EU represented Stoke Central which was pro-Brexit. He tells us that he never sees a Corbyn supporter in Waitrose….although I am told there is not actually a branch of Waitrose in Stoke.

The problem with Tony B Liar is that he inspired Blairism and Blairite MPs are only now in their prime. Take Caroline Flint MP for Don Valley in Yorkshire. You can take the Girl out of Twickenham Girls School but can you take Twickenham Girls School out of the Girl?

So Hunt’s parting shot to his Party is a by-election they dont need. And Jamie Reed, former MP for Copeland has resigned to work at Sellafield. Another by election Labour doesnt need.

Yet the thought of Blairite MPs resigning to get jobs more suited to their many talents is an interesting one. If anyone reading this wants to give a job to Jess Phillips, I will happily give her a reference.

Will we ever hear of Tristram Hunt again? Probably not …unless one of those Cockneys on “Eastenders” refers to him….or am I thinking of a “Jeremy”?
