Sham Fight ……..Sham Reconciliation

On Friday 13th……..the annual “Royal Black Perceptory” marches in Scarva, County Down. Our TV News will of course show the highlight of the day….The Sham Fight. I suspect that as in every other year, King William will defeat King James.

But thats part of Norn Iron…..the “Sham Fight” at Scarva. It is just one day in a year of course. But really is it any worse that 365 days of Sham Reconciliation.

As can be seen on TV News tonight, we have the annual squabble about the Ardoyne Parade. The Orangemen from North Belfast have been told by the Parades Commission that they have to make their return journey past the flashpoint Ardoyne shops before 4pm. This is hilariously the thin end of a wedge. They will have to be home before the celebrations at the Twelfth “field” in South Belfast has actually ended.

Brilliant Stuff!. It is of course entirely unreasonable. And I would actually feel sorry for Orangemen if it was not for the fac that their organisation is so repulsive.

But this is the Real “Northern Ireland”. Do not get fooled by the Titanic Experience. Do not be fooled by MTV Awards. Do not be fooled by the Irish Open Golf in Portrush. Do not be fooled by Peter Robinson attending a GAA match in Armagh. Do not be fooled by Martin McGuinness shaking hands with Elizabeth Windsor. Do not be fooled by a clipper boat called “Derry-Londonderry”.

Do not be fooled by smiling TV journalists peddling the latest Good News Story from Stormont.

For it is all a massive con trick. “Northern Ireland 2012……..Our Place. Our Time” is the latest slogan and it is all complete bollox.

“Hope I Die Before I Get Old”

October 1965….and The Who top the charts talking ’bout my g…g…generation. And it was my generation. I was 13 years old. As it turns out Keith Moon died aged 32 and John Entwistle died aged 57. Pete Townshend is still alive at 67 and Roger Daltry is 68.

My father hated the song…he didnt like any pop song of course but perhaps “My Generation” he hated most. The negativity.

My father who had been chronically ill most of his adult life died aged 67. My mother was almost 91 when she died. If we are honest we all want to die before we get old and probably we never get to think about it much until we actually “see” old age.

Crucially SOME young people see or used to see old age in their own extended families. My grandparents had all died by the time I was 9 years old so I never got to really see old age until I was well into my adult life. My mother and my aunt died in 2003 and 2004 and both suffered dementia.

We often try and pretend that old age can be fulfilling …..I am sure it is….but really only for a minority of people. Frankly I am not bothered about the cost to the “taxpayer” of living to be 100 years old….indeed I intend to screw the British  taxpayer out of every last cent. I am of course concerned about the effect on the lives of my own children…an elderly and sickly relative (in mind or body) is a strain and of course there is the financial strain of nursing home costs.

Ah the financial strain. It is of course my intention that this house and all my worldly goods pass to my sons. Id feel cheated if my wife or I was widowed early and the survivor became old and frail and the greater share of the nest egg went to the State to cover the expense of nursing homes.

In an ideal world, every child would have healthy parents who lived to be 85 and then died in their sleep. Thats what I wish for my sons.

Margaret Thatcher ruined it all. When people didnt live so long….and when the State thought retirement home provision was their responsibility and when the extended family meant more……..the assumption was that (if needed) old peoples home were plentiful.

But Thatcher introduced the Market. With various degrees of care, provision of old peoples homes was handed over to the private sector. Essentially a two-tier system emerged. Allegedly better care in the private sector. Allegedly basic care in the State.

Of course thats how upper middle class people thought it would be. But it didnt work out like that. As the State sector collapsed, more “ordinary folks” went into the private sector homes…the bill being paid by the State. They had rooms next to the “privately funded” (from their sale of houses and assets etc).

The situation…..which I as a socialist love ….is that it is probably better to be poor than rich. At least your children wont lose out.

Of course old age is often an unattractive problem. Ask any man of 60…..not just me…..and they will say “dont put me in a home”. Ive not seen an old persons home which I actually liked. I love my house. I love the fact that I am surrounded by my……..archive……….Archive is perhaps a strange word but it is as good as any. Over six decades  I have accumulated stuff…..photographs, books, toy soldiers, records etc. I have pushed the limits of my life in some ways. And I dont want my life restricted….physically, mentally or put into one small room.

Nor do I wish to lose my cat. I dont want to sit in a communal TV room watching “Countdown” and thanking God that Im not as near death as the old codger next to me. Nor do I want to look at the goldfish or the two budgies in the hall……….or wait for the nice lady who brings the golden labrador for the old folks to stroke.

No life is ever enhanced by going into …..even the best…old folks home……I dont want a communal dining room and I dont want regularly assessed by a social worker. Nor do I want to spend the 12th July in some God forsaken old folks home in Bangor, Antrim, Coleraine and dutifully asked if I want to go out to the end of the garden to watch the Orangemen pass……..NO F****** WAY. Nor do I want to be intimidated by the sight of fellow residents like Gertie and Elizabeth in their red, white and blue finery watching the latest “Royal Wedding” on TV.

Nor do I want invited to the Sunday night religious sing song. Nor do I want an Easter Egg from St Vincent de Paul or a selection box from the Salvation Army. And I can handle my own postal vote thanks very much nurse…………just SDLP #1 and Sinn Féin #2 and I dont care if your cousin is standing for the UUP and I dont dare mention the bastards in the Alliance Party to me.

Thats the problem with old age. It is very democratic. They dont really do Catholic or Protestant homes any more……no barriers, no walls. It no longer matters? But am I to restrict my conversation in the TV lounge when David Ford is on UTV and (worse still) Chris Lyttle is on BBC?

Thats the problem with losing “independence”. We become bland. A “lets get alongerist” paradise.

Actually being 40 was brilliant. I was at the height of my powers…….young family, good job. Being 50 was terrible…….the worry of relatives in nursing homes, my health was not good and the job did not seem that great after all.

I feared being 60……but actually it is turning out rather pleasant. I have outlived my fears……except the one about living in a “home”. This decade is crucial and possibly even the next year will define the decade.

Frankly my g..g…g..generation was not really supposed to grow old. Still I have a repetoire of 1960s hits with which I can entertain my fellow residents. Come on old folks……..all together now “hope I die before I get old”

Support Your Local Mayor?

June is a strange month in our twenty-six council chambers. Selecting the Mayor or Council Chairman seems too often to be the highlight of the year. For DUP and Sinn Fein at least.

Power Sharing and D’Hondt give way to naked tribalism. Take Strabane…16 councillors. (SF 8…DUP4…UUP1…SDLP 1….Independent 2). The DUP took the Chair. Sinn Féin could have blocked them of course but new Chair of the Council Thomas Kerrigan cannot bring himself to shake hands with SF councillors. A similar situation in Omagh Council.

Take Craigavon Council. DUP cannot bring themselves to tolerate a Sinn Féin Mayor …so block the candidate.

But isnt it curious that DUP and Sinn Féin are getting on so well at Stormont level. Mark Durkan put it well a few months ago…..DUP and Sinn Féin are “setting up a one party state with an orange wing and a green wing”.

To maximise their vote DUP play the “croppy lie down” card at Council level. To maximise their vote Sinn Féin play the “martyr” to Unionist intransigence. DUP and Sinn Féin are actually facilitating each other. Which means that genuine power-sharing and actually not playing games in Council Chambers and actually working for a community is always the best option.

Thus the election of SDLP veteran to the Chair of Ballymena Council is a sign of maturity on behalf of the overwhelmingly unionist council. And the election of Sharon Haughey (one of the brightest of the younger folks in SDLP) to be Lord Mayor of Armagh is a very good development.

The Easter Rising …And Stamp Collecting

History is not just about Events. It is also about how those “events” are seen years after they happened. And while the “events” themselves dont change, the perception changes.

Take the Easter Rising of 1916, one of the key “events” to be commemorated n this Decade of Centenaries. An interesting way to look at the way the Easter Rising was previously “officially” commemorated is to look at the postage stamps issued.

The 25th Anniversary of the Easter Rising was commemorated in 1941, at the height of the Second World War. Due to wartime restrictions and shortages, it was only possible to issue two temporary stamps with an overprint at April 1941. Later in the year (October) the commemorative stamp was issued. It featured aa armed volunteer, the GPO and the opening words (in Gaelic) of the Proclamation.

The 50th Anniversary of the Easter Rising was a big event in itself. Many of those who had fought in the Rising were still involved in politics. Eámon de Valera was an t-Uachtarán and Seán Lemass an Taoiseach. The eight stamp set featuring all seven signatories of the Proclamation was ambitious and reflected national pride.

The 75th Anniversary of the Easter Rising was in 1991. Mary Robinson was an t-Uachtarán and Charles Haughey was Taoiseach. The commemoration at the GPO was muted and this is reflected in the issue of a single stamp, featuring the statue of Cuchullain in GPO and the Proclamation. It was very understated…it was impossible to have a full blown celebration of the Rising while violence which had broken out in the North in 1966 was still going on. Some commentators attribute the outbreak of violence in Belfast 1966 as a loyalist reaction to northern commemorations.

The 90th Anniversary in 2006 was a simple design merely featuring the General Post Office and the dates 1916-2006. Perhaps with one eye on centenaries a stamp commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme was issued in June 2006.

In four years stamps will be issued to commemorate the centenaries of the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme. It has been the policy of the Irish Post Office to where appropriate issue stamps jointly with another Post Office. For example, the Battle of Fontenoy was commorated in 1995 by the issue of a joint stamp with Belgium. The San Patricio Batallion was commemorated in 1997 by a joint issue with Mexico and more recently (2010) the Irish contribution to the independendence of Chile was marked by a joint issue with Chile.

Almost certainly the centenary of the Battle of the Somme will be marked by a joint issue….which will of course please Letsgetalongerists and appease Unionists.

The key thing is that the issue of postage stamps for national commemorations has always reflected the official view in the year of issue…….and 2016 will be no different.

Alan Partridge…Stephen Nolan

I am watching Steve Coogan in a spoof documentary as Alan Partridge “Welcome to the Places of My Life” and I am struck by the uncanny (but not physical) resemblance between Alan Partridge and Stephen Nolan.

From now on……I will not be able to watch Alan Partridge without thinking of Stephen Nolan. Nor indeed will I be able to watch Stephen Nolan without thinking of Alan Partridge.

Local TV ……dont ya just love it?

Historic Handshake…Get A Grip!

“The best laid plans of mice and men go oft awry”. As Robert Burns said……And the best laid plans of press officers, conflict resolutionists, special advisors and their allies in the Media and Blogosphere. As it turned out the enduring image of yesterday is not Martin McGuinness and Elizabeth Windsor shaking hands. The most enduring image from yesterday is of three police officers standing on top of their land rover as it is caught up in severe flooding in South Belfast.

There are at least ten threads on another website discussing in one form or another the great historic moment. None as yet on the Flooding. Loadsa reasons. Flooding is not a suitable subject for nerdy political interest or gossip. Flooding is for…ordinary people.

Flooding can be dismissed as an act of GOD. Although when just about every shower of rain over the past two years seems to produce flooding somewhere…..and South Belfast has had more than its share….it suggests that there is a degree of under-funding and incompetence in the responsible agencies.

The control of yesterdays Royal Visit…..and the compliance of the media…..was of course to produce another “feel good” moment for the long suffering Norn Iron people. Just like the Titanic and like every upcoming “historic moment” in this “historic decade”. Bread and Circus. The best “feel good” people in Norn Iron could have is the assurance of basic things that make us feel good……living in fear of your house being flooded or having to abandon your car is actually a bigger issue than Martin McGuinness and Elizabeth Windsor.

Of course you cant eat a flag (John Hume) but all those cheering crowds waving flags at Stormont yesterday should have shown up to help their neighbours in South and West Belfast. Perhaps even used their flags to soak up the flood water.

The Circus moves on. Elizabeth Windsor moves on. Yesterday she met Martin McGuinness. Today she unveils a memorial to RAF Bomber Command…the royals must be good at small talk…….discussing things like colateral damage and how the deaths of civilians including women and children is unfortunate and unavoidable. And anyway our cause was “just” and the other side started it anyway.

Of course the IRA and its apologists will be outraged that they are compared to the British War Machine.

Of course the RAF and its apologists will be outraged at any comparison to a terrorist organisation.

I dont know how the civilians killed by both feel. I declare an interest. My great uncle was married twice, the first time to a Belfast Presbyterian,. They emigrated to USA in 1910, where they had three children (two sons one daughter). Widowed he returned to Dublin in 1923 and his children raised as Presbyterians in Belfast. The daughter married a German in 1938 and after the War, her husband informed the family that she had been killed by a direct hit by an allied bomb.

Of course this week we have been told that Mrs Windsor had a relative killed by the IRA. Well indeed I know some folks killed by the IRA. But I also had a relative killed by the British or Allied bombers. And quite possibly that gives me a relationship with Mrs Windsor…..surely some of her German relatives were also killed by RAF Bomber Command.

Star Trek…….And The Queen

I watched one of my favourite Star Trek (The Next Generation) episodes today.

Yes I am a big fan of Captain Picard and his crew. Some of the political correctness is a bit heavy-handed. But occasionally there is an episode that makes me think.

Today was the episode “Wounded”. See the wikipedia link for a full analysis of the episode.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wounded_(Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation)

In brief the episode introduces the Cardasians and gives a prominent role to Transporter Chief Miles O’Brien (Colm Meaney) who would later serve on Deep Space 9. The episode tells the story of a rogue Star Fleet captain….Ben Maxwell…who is breaching the fragile peace between the Federation and the Cardsassians by attacking space stations and ships. Maxwell had lost his family in the previous war with the Cardassians and O’Brien himself was deeply suspicious of the Cardassians. Indeed he hated them.

Which brings me to the visit of Elizabeth Windsor to Norn Iron. Decency and a nod to History demands that I should call her (at least) Queen Elizabeth. But the weight of history…..national and indeed personal means that this is a bridge I cannot cross. A bridge too far for me. The fact that I have an aversion to the institution of monarchy and the sycophancy which accompanies merely complicates the situation and provides me with the cover to……..HATE.

The simple truth of how I live my life is that there is nobody greater or lesser than I am.

This is as true of Elizabeth Windsor as it is of Martin McGuinness. Neither greater or lesser.

I never bought into the “IRA are animals” and wont condemn Martin McGuinness for his history. He is 62 years old, a working class boy from Derry. I am 60 years old, a working class boy from West Belfast. Nor will I praise Martin McGuinness for the man he is today.

I refuse to believe that he is a better man than I am because he will shake the hand of Elizabeth Windsor tomorrow. Simply put……I would not do it.

Because rather like Captain Jean-Luc Picard said today……….”Hatred  becomes comfortable like old leather” or as Chief O’Brien said to the Cardassian in Ten Forward……”I dont hate you Cardassian….I hate what you made me become”.

And really thats my stance. Maybe I did not do the things Martin McGuinness did. Yet maybe he is a greater man than I am because of the journey which he made/is making. Maybe I really am a lesser man for not being willing to travel the shorter distance from where I was to where I am today.

At 60 years of age, I have seen the Future and frankly I do not like it.  I am more comfortable with the Past.

So……Martin McGuinness

I kinda feel sorry for Martin McGuinness. If he had refused to meet Mrs Windsor, he would have been criticised by unionists and lets get alongerists. If he had agreed to meet her, then the same people would have gloated.

Now Martin McGuinness is right up there with Jomo Kenyatta and Archbishop Makarios. Former “terrorists” who met Mrs Windsor.

No big deal. I suspect that most former IRA types who would object to this are already defected to the dissidents. The reaction of mainstream nationalists/republicans will be interesting.

For the record, I wouldnt want to meet Mrs Windsor but I am not a public figure or representative. Just how far Sinn Féin can move away from its traditional support and indeed the “floating voters” will be interesting. Where exactly do those floating voters go?

If a SDLP person was Deputy First Minister…..it is more than likely that he/she would have met Mrs Windsor. It would be expected. It would even have been right and decent. But an uncomfortable thing for me to watch.

And of course Sinn Féin would have criticised SDLP as “traitors”

The Angela Merkel Flag

So the Irish team didnt exactly set the Euros on fire. But at least the fans did some good.

The famous Angela Merkel flag sold for E16,000 on RTE Radio 2 and a further E5,000 was raised. And the money is going to charity including Oscar Knox, a young lad from County Antrim who is fighting cancer.

Sometimes a “feel good” story can just make a person “feel good”.

 Sometimes we under-estimate ourselves.

Sport And War

So………Germany 4 Greece 2

George Orwell thought that Sport was like War without the shooting. And Cuban baseball, Russian basketball, American ice hockey and East German athletics have been used as weapons during what we used to call The Cold War.

But wasnt everyone on the side of Greece tonight? A new Cold War. Germany is the enemy.
