Niall Ó Donnghaile

I have a lot of time for Cllr Niall Ó Donnghaile, the former Mayor of Belfast …he is I believe the youngest ever Mayor and he deserves credit for at least making one seat in East Belfast comparatively safe for Nationalism…in this case Sinn Féin. That is a hard thing to do.

He is also a member of that younger generation of Sinn Féin politicians.

I might also add that any time I have met him, he has been unfailingly polite to me.

He has certainly made mistakes. Not least when he had an attack of the vapours when he realised he would as Mayor…hand out a medal to a schoolgirl wearing a British Army cadet uniform.

He thought that he was on-message with Sinn Féin but he got it wrong and was chastised by no less a person than Martin McGuinness. Worse his Deputy Mayor…Ruth Patterson the senior DUP flegger got all indignant and Niall had to listen to a lecture from her in the Council Chamber.

It cant be easy listening to a lecture from Ruth Patterson. Nor can it be easy to make Ruth Patterson sound reasonable.

If I thought that Niall would learn from this, I am disappointed to see that he has gone off-message again.image

While his Party colleague, Phil Flanagan honourably condemned the bullying of SDLP candidate John Coyle (Fermanagh-South Tyrone), Niall seems to be part of the baying pack of so-called Sinn Féin supporters.

Niall is better than that.

But it is a bigger question than that. He really needs to carve out a place for himself rather than taking photo opportunities with some SF “hard nuts” of a previous generation. He has been hanging out with some very articulate people. But….are they telling the truth when he nods his head so enthusiastically?

“You Know Nothing Jon Snow”

Full marks to Kit Harrington, the actor who plays Jon Snow on “Game Of Thrones”, the fantasy HBO series, much of which is made in and around Belfast.

Most of the cast …when prompted…have spoken about the people and scenery in “Northern Ireland” (sic) and how great it is to be working It is all music to the ears of the people who run the Northern Ireland Tourist Board. For Its a hard sell. Almost thirty years of bombs, sectarian killings followed by nearly twenty years of Peace exposing the hatred that underpinned it all.

Like it or not…after you have seen the Giants Causeway (which DUP members in Government is only 6,000 years old anyway), there is not that much else to see. The Real thing about tourists here is that they want to see the place that had a small scale civil war. They want to see the murals in East and West Belfast…the stone memorials to IRA and loyalist paramilitaries…the Republican Plot in Milltown…..the Peace Walls that divide Catholic and Protestant communities in several parts of the city.

Thats what those open-top buses are about… Terror Tourism.

Frustratingly for the “Northern Ireland Tourist Board”, the peak of the Tourist Season is in in June and July when sectarianism is most visible thru Orange supremacy and their parades. The Tourist Board would like the Twelfth to be “inclusive” …like Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Notting Hill in London. LetsGetAlongerism? Yes….am I right in saying that Mick Fealty of Slugger O’Toole said that the “Twelfth is a day for us all”?

The Tourist Industry has been selected as an industry which can bring billions into the Norths economy. The Republic of Ireland is streets ahead in bringing in the Dollars and the Euros.

The Tourist Board will try anything. The bottom of no barrel will go unscraped.

Titanic…nobody in Belfast gave a damn before the Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslett starred in the movie. Now we have a Titanic Visitor Centre. We have had a G8 Summit. We have had the World Police and Fire Games. We have had a Talls Ship Race. We have had the start of the Tour of Italy Cycle Race. We have had MTV Awards.

We even have a posh “Cathedral Quarter”, where yuppies mingle with “creatives” to pose in a strange and expensive “Café Culture”. A rival to Paris or the Buckfast drinkers in the City’s car parks.

We do incredibly have a Movie Industry. No….seriously we do. In fact, I myself have passed an audition for a movie a few years ago called “City of Ember”.

So…Game of Thrones. Hard to avoid the postcards and the merchandising in Belfast. I think it is called “product placement”….how NIKE, or Coca Cola or Budweiser get subtle advertising in movies. The Tourist Board seems to be placing Norn Iron into Game of Thrones.

Naturally in interviews,, the cast are prompted to say something nice about Norn Iron. And whether it is a contractural obligation or just politeness, they tell us they love Norn Iron….the place and the people.

Except Kit Harrington who plays Jon Snow.He hasnt read the Tourist Board script. In an American chat show in which he is promoting the show, the host notes the exotic locations like Croatia and Spain and Harrington gets “Belfast”. Harrington notes that Belfast is “ok for three or four days” and that he has been in Belfast for five years. He adds Belfast is proud of three things …the most bombed hotel in Europe, building the Titanic which sank and Game ofThrones. Well….at least the Tourist Board will be delighted that Harrington didnt mention that Belfast also built De Lorean Cars.

Everywhere Kit Harrington goes, the Game of Thrones fans remind him of one of the Show’s most famous lines….”You know NOTHING Jon Snow”.

Seemingly Kit Harrington knows more. That our Tourist Industry enriches a few …but does not enrich the people with “Zero Hour” contracts and minimum wage.

The character Jon Snow is often referred to as “Ned Stark’ bastard”. I do not know how the Tourist Board refers to Kit Harrington.

Upper Class Twits Of The Year Fly Into Belfast

OK ….so I said that the British Conservative Party do not put up candidates in Norn Iron. And it turns out they are actually standing in SIXTEEN of the eighteen constituencies. Perhaps it would be churlish to point out that the two constituencies in which they are not standing….Fermanagh-South Tyrone and North Belfast…are the two where the DUP-UUP pact is most effective.

A cynic might say that this “pact” will be helpful to the Tories if they need DUP support to form a government after the Election.

But standing in sixteen seats is impressive, isnt it? A gesture of respect to Tory supporters in Norn Iron?

Well…not quite. ELEVEN of the Tories are being flown in from Conservative HQ in London. Some of them admit to never even visiting Norn Iron.

It is almost….offensive.

So if you are passing thru Aldergrove Airport and see eleven lost souls, who look like they belong in the Monty Python sketch “Upper Class Twit of the Year”…..say hello to your Conservative candidate.

“Sister” Parties & “Girlfriend” Parties

“You should support the British Labour Party…your sister Party” they say.

“You should support the Irish Labour Party…your sister Party” they say.

I daresay they are only half-right. Family of sorts. And I daresay we would support them. If Joan Burton lost her seat in Dublin and opened a sandwich bar in the Jervis Street Shopping Mall, I might well be inclined to stop off for a wee cup of tea and a piece of apple tart. If Ed Miliband lost his seat in Doncaster and opened up a newsagents shop, I would certainly call there and buy my copy of The Guardian and The Irish News.

It seems only right and proper to support your siblings. But if your sibling Joan joins in coalition with a ruthless right wing Party like Fine Gael, you probably wouldn’t vote for your sister. If your sibling Ed sided with your worst enemy, David Cameron and bullied your girlfriend, then we cant really support that kinda thing.

There are of course great family occasions….weddings (or Party Conferences) where we toast each other with fraternal greetings and big set-piece occasions like ThanksGiving or European Elections where we ….SDLP, Irish Labour and British Labour are all from the greater Party of European Socialist Clan.

Much as we tolerate, like or even love our siblings….we are never going to marry them.

When it comes to LUUUUURRRRVVVVEEEEE….we have a wee Scottish lassie. The SNP is our “girlfriend”. The SNPs best friend is a wee Welsh girl, Plaid Cymru. If we ever get married to the SNP, I can see Plaid as the bridesmaid.

Family is Family of course. SDLP is “nationalist”….so of course are our siblings….Irish or British. Somehow our siblings dont like us flirting with a nationalist, who is Scottish. But hey….live with it. Ed has a problem with our Scottish girlfriend. His mates who live in the same street made our Scottish girlfriends life a misery. They were as bad as David and his old bitch of a mother, Maggie.

The point about “British” Politics is that SNP and Plaid Cymru dont actually have the word “Labour” in their titles. But they are more “Labour” than “Labour”. British Labour played with the affections of the Scots…and the SNP accuse Labour of abusing Scotland and taking her for granted.

But how Labour is Labour?. Privileged Londoners… sons of a German refugee intellectual scurry off to Labour heartlands like South Shields and Doncaster to further their careers. Likewise than intellectual con-man Tony B Liar in Sedgefield.

Surely our girl….the first in her family to attend university is at least as working class as anyone in Labour. And of course, she actually holds more Labour values than anyone in British Labour. The SNP government in Scotland has the kinda programme that should be in a Labour manifesto….education, health, defence, ethical foreign policy.

It is a simple truth that British Labour is dishonest and trustworthy. It is actually in the intersts of socialism that SNP, Plaid Cymru and SDLP keep Labour honest.

Poster Boys & Girls…#6 Alban Maginness (SDLP)

Saturday 4th April 2015. Glengormley.

image

Thanks to my (free travel) Translink Pass…a bus ride from Belfast for a walk around Glengormley. Quite a surprise to see so many SDLP posters for North Belfast candidate, Alban Maginness.

Beginning (amusingly) at Clifton Street Orange Hall, there were posters for Alban, all along Antrim Road. I would estimate that SDLP posters outnumbered Sinn Féin posters at least 10:1 and outnumbered DUP posters by maybe 20:1.

Posters for SDLP were at all points…New Lodge, Newington, Fortwilliam, Bellevue and into Glengormley. Likewise posters for Gerry Kelly (SF) were at all points on the Antrim Road to Glengormley but more spaced out. DUP (Dodds) posters were mostly in the Fortwilliam and Glengormley area.

I realise that Posters are not Votes. But I was really surprised to see SDLP so visible.

Je Suis Kenyan Christian Student

So …back in January…Islamist extremists murdered French cartoonists and journalists in Paris. The Victims had committed the grievous offence of insulting Islam. Let me be clear that I dont like being gratuitously offensive to anything that people hold dear. Yes the cartoonists had a right to offend and certainly there can be no excuse for mass murder.

In Belfast we had the spectacle of the Golden Halo of LetsGetAlongerists and our leading journalists and bloggers gathering at the City Hall. They had placards….”Je Suis Charlie”.

image

Islamist extremists are nasty. The mass murder of Kenyan students…mostly Christians was a worse crime than the murders in Paris. Both in terms of numbers and the Kenyan students had committed no real or imagined offence.

I am not aware of any plan to organise a protest at Belfast City Hall.

Why would the usual suspects who grab a placard and rush to City Hall to protest just about anything not get worked up about Kenya?

Well it cant be the “Christian” thing because many of the “Je Suis Charlie” protestors were Christians. It cant be a “Race” thing because many of the “Je Suis Charlie” protestors have protested anti-racism in Belfast.

Why?

Well possibly Kenya is more remote than France. Rather like a natural disaster in Western Europe gets more press coverage than a natural disaster in Southern Asia. After all…we dismiss suffering from Disease, Famine, Drought and War in the Third World.  Part of our “western” sense of Entitlement is that we should not suffer as the “Third World” suffers.

Of course Journalists and Bloggers have a highly advanced sense of Entitlement. Phone Hacking anyone? Bribing people in Public Office anyone? Yet curiously British Journalists who find colleagues in court feel their profession is a “victim”.

Hypocrisy.

Poster Boys & Girls…#4 Paula Bradshaw (Alliance)

South Belfast. This Paula Bradshaw poster is at Tesco on Lisburn Road.

image

In 2015, Ms Bradshaw is standing for the Alliance Party. In 2010 she stood for the UUP-Conservative nonsense. I cant speculate on the Party she will be representing in 2020.

Her husband Ian Parsley was a candidate for Alliance in the 2009 European Elections and for the UUP-Conservative fiasco in 2010. He is now back with Alliance…at least I havent heard of any recent change.
