Poster Boys & Girls…#10 Andrew Muir (Alliance Party)

Tuesday 14th April.

image image

Andrew Muir (Alliance candidate for North Down) in High Street, Bangor near a bar called “Fealtys”. Muir is one of those second tier Alliance politicans. Youthful but a veteran, he has already been Mayor of North Down and was Alliance candidate in Newry-Armagh (Westminster 2010) …one of a group of second tier people who were parachuted into constituencies to “fly the flag”.

He is openly gay….which should not matter ….but Muir seems to position himself as a “gay politician” as much as an “Alliance politician”. That is brave but really has mixed results. The openess can turn off people who are either homophobic or consider it irrelevant but Muir can reach outside narrow party politics.

His candidature is as much about Assembly Elections 2016 as it is about Westmimster Elections 2015. Stephen Farry MLA is the top Alliance man in North Down and Muir has positioned himself as the second best known Alliance person in the constituency.

Poster Boys & Girls…#9 “Lady” Sylvia Hermon (Independent)

Tuesday 14th April.

image

This poster of “Lady” Hermon, the outgoing Independent MP for North Down is in Hamilton Road, Bangor. I find Bangor curiously “non political” in the traditional Norn Iron sense. It is almost semi-detached from Norn Iron and Sylvia seems to attract votes from liberal unionists, LetsGetAlongerists, Greens and nationalists.

She sits on the Opposition benches in the British Parliament but I regard her as genuinely “independent”. This leads people to assume she has “Labour” sympathies.

For my American readers, the “Lady” in the title does not mean she is a member of the House of Lords. “Lady” is also used as a title for wives and widows of “knights of the realm” and Sylvia is the widow  of “Sir” Jack Hermon, a former Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constaabulary.

They married quite late in life. She is a former Law Lecturer at Queens University, Belfast. And I think it is fair to say that she married Jack Hermon late in life and first came to attention as a very public defender of his reputation when he was in declining health.

Jack Hermon was maybe the last of the old-style RUC Chief Constables. Yet curiously in an interview some years ago, Sylvia said that Sinn Féin politicians had the decency to ask about his health, while unionist politicians rarely did.

Sinn Féin: A Half-Arsed Policy

Remember the good old days when Sinn Féin was so purely Republican when they would not stand in Elections…north and south? They called themselves “Anti H Block Prisoner” in 1981 and got elected to Westminster, An Dáil and local councils in Norn Iron.

Remember all that internal fuss when they decided to stand for An Dáil and Stormont and take their seats. Now SF is in government in Norn Iron and hope to be in government in the Republic of Ireland next year.

Of course they are standing for election to Westminster next month and the outgoing five MPs do not take their Westminster seats.

image

The Oath Of Allegiance? Principle? The general assumption is that Sinn Féin would love to get into Westminster but they cant offend their core membership and many of their voters. To many nationalists and republicans, the “Oath” IS an issue. The wording sticks in the throats of republicans….in England, Scotland, Wales as well as Norn Iron.

It is a well documented argument. Is it better to be inside the House of Commons or outside the House of Commons to necessarily represent a constituency. SDLP takes one view. Sinn Féin takes another view. I dont want to repeat those arguments.

Suffice to say that Sinn Féin will not play any part in post-Election Westminster politics. SF will not be part of any “coalition talks” (there is no guarantee SDLP will either) and nor will SF be voting on any issue affecting Norn Iron as it goes thru a British Parliament.

And yet they will pledge to fight “Tory Welfare Cuts”….recent local U-turns excepted.

But they will not fight legislation line by line in Westminster. And they will call for global justice like a Palestinian nation ….but not vote for it.

The commonly held view is that Sinn Féin are looking for a way into Westminster.

Mickey Brady in Newry-Armagh says abstention is the current policy. Michelle Gildernew in Fermanagh-South Tyrone says “Never Say Never”. Coincidently these are the two most vulnerable Sinn Féin seats.

It is a dilemna isnt it?

I propose a solution. Sinn Féin go to Westminster and pretend to take the Oath of Allegiance ….say “An Ainm an Athair agus an Mhic….” In Irish and the House of Commons clerks will have no idea what they are saying. Then they take their places on the green benches….but on principle only sit on one buttock.

It would be uncomfortable but principled. Some might say it is bare-faced “cheek” (sic) but I like to think of it as “Half-Arsed”….which is in line with a lot of other SF policies.

I hope they get it all sorted out in the next few years….in time for Gerry Adams to take his place in the House of Lords.

SDLP South Belfast Campaign Launched

Last night. Malone House Hotel, Belfast.

Alasdair McDonnell was in pretty good form officially launching the South Belfast Campaign.

Fearghal McKinney MLA made a short speech (first pic) before Alasdair spoke. There is a good mood in SDLP these days.

The Slugger East Belfast Debate: I Wuz There (Kinda)

I had a busy day yesterday. Breakfast in a shopping mall at Craigavon. Bus to Lurgan. Train to Bangor, getting there around noon. A few hours there in the company of a fellow blogger. At 3pm, I was on a bus to Belfast, via Holywood. At Laganside Bus Centre, I got off that bus and got on to a Newtownards bus…thru East Belfast. At 5pm I was getting a bus out of Newtownards and at 5.45 pm, I was at the Strand Arts Centre….or cimema!!!…for the great Slugger Debate between two of the East Belfast candidates. An hour later, I was in a taxi taking me to Dr Alasdair McDonnells, constituency campaign launch in South Belfast. At 10pm, I was in McDonalds in Lurgan.

A man of my age should be retired. Actually….I am retired.

I love Elections. It is a sacred time. Last night, I was talking to my colleague Mary Muldoon, who has the pretty thankless task of standing for SDLP in East Belfast. She was telling me how in (nationalist) West Belfast in 1977…her first campaign….she was chased by a mob as she and her husband were putting up posters. In those days, candidates used their own ladders. Mary’s ladder was abandoned and the mob made off with it. In Nationalist West Belfast. And two nights ago, Mary was at a hustings in Loyalist East Belfast, making her SDLP case to an audience in a Willowfield Church .That is progress. That is simple decency…an Evangelical Protestant Church extending to SDLP (and indeed Sinn Féin) simple courtesy. And Respect for the Democratic System.

How ironic is it then that Slugger O’Toole could not extend the same basic courtesy. In 1977, a nationalist mob stole Mary’s ladder. Did Slugger O’Toole steal four ladders last night?

At 6pm last night at the Strand “Arts Centre” (its a cinema!!!!) I was on mission to BLAG as much as I was on a mission to BLOG. Bare-faced lying to Brian from Slugger that I was hanging about the foyer, waiting for some tickets. Sneaked into the auditorium as David and Alan were setting up.

Actually I just wanted to know who was attending. Media, a couple of representatives from NIO, only one or two who I recognised from The Golden Halo of LetsGetAlongerism. Brian and David both indicated that there was no problem with me staying. So effectively…I was pushing at an open door.

In practical terms, I could not stay even if I wanted to stay. It clashed with a SDLP event in South Belfast. But clearly I had a problem with the event. It would have been wrong to support the event. Wrong to hear the opinions of just two of six candidates. To me…this is not what this sacred time of Elections is all about.

Again let me emphasise that I was treated with courtesy last night. Let this not appear to be “personal”. David McCann, who reads this blog understood my reservations.

Outside of Slugger O’Toole, there is broad agreement that the Slugger Debate disadvantages at least four candidates …from the Green Party, SDLP, Sinn Féin and Conservatives. I would be surprised if any serious analyst within the Slugger “core team” disagreed with this. They might reasonably claim that the four parties are not potential winners in East Belfast. But votes cast for the small parties can influence the result.

To be frank, Gavin Robinson’s chances of winning the seat for DUP are boosted  by the withdrawal of UUP and TUV. Naomi Long’s chances of winning the seat would have been enhanced if the four remaining parties withdrew. She might well be “scathing” about pan-unionist election pacts but if she had heard last week on “nomination day” that any one or more of the small parties had withdrawn….she would not nearly be so scathing.

Slugger might well argue and will argue that the four small parties will maybe not score more than ten per cent of votes cast next month. But Slugger will know those votes are crucial.

If respected analysts can argue that this event boosts the Alliance Party, then there is a clear question for Slugger O’Toole. Their own folks can say “Yes it does” or “No it doesnt” or deploy a default if incredible “Not necessarily”.

If analysts are agreed that Naomi Long and Alliance are boosted  and Slugger cant or wont address that belief, then it certainly does open the door for Slugger critics and occasional critics to suggest that boosting Naomi and Alliance was the intention. An honest and bullish response from Slugger might be. “For Gods sake, its not rocket science….we are Slugger O’Toole and our default position is one of supporting “progressives” and naturally we would prefer Naomi to win. can you really be surprised?”.

Yet Politics is a “bubble”. The East Belfast taxi driver who picked me up at the Strand, asked me what was going on there. Frankly he didnt think much of either Long or Robinson. But when we call it the Great Debate…it is hyperbole. It is 6am now and BBC and UTV News will be reporting it all and it might just influence a few people to vote Alliance or DUP at the expense of a smaller party.

But it was not a bad day. Good for Politics that there are a few SDLP (Mary Muldoon) posters in unionist areas of East Belfast. Good for Politics that there are a few DUP (David Simpson) posters in nationalist areas of Lurgan. Of course anti-democrats might well remove them before Election Day.

Quite possibly SDLP posters in East Belfast will end up on July bonfires. It would be ironic if Brian, Alan and David from Slugger condemned it because…lets be honest guys, thats (figuratively) what you folks did to Greens, SDLP, Sinn Féin and Conservatives last night.

Commenting on another thread on this Blog, unionist observer (known only as “Turgon”)  says that Slugger O’Toole needs to be constantly reminded of this episode. He is right. It has damaged Sluggers reputation…they will publicly deny or ignore this.

It is a bad error of judgement. But at 3am on 8th May….when the election results are announced and if Naomi Long is declared Member of Parliament for East Belfast, very few LetsGetAlongerists will be remembering a hustings event that many consider favoured Naomi Long.

The Ginger Ninja

As she prepares for her head-to-head encounter (courtesy of Slugger O’Toole)  Naomi Long did an interview with “Sticky” Henry McDonald in yesterdays Guardian. I dont suppose that there are many copies of The Guardian sold in East Belfast…it is £1.60 per copy.

“Sticky” McDonalds interview was hardly hard-hitting. It allowed Naomi to be the Ginger Ninja. The ordinary wee girl from Dee Street who …against the odds…won East Belfast from the nasty DUP.  This is Naomi’s schtik (sp)…the carefully crafted image of the wee woman facing down sectarian bullies in her constituency. She is absolutely right to turn Loyalist bullying to her advantage.

Curiously Naomi Long is “scathing” about the DUP-UUP electoral pact, which means that her only unionist challenger is Gavin Robinson (DUP).

Curiously Naomi Long is not boycotting the Slugger O’Toole “selective hustings” even though it is a pact. A pact to ensure that only Alliance Party and DUP are taken seriously. Realistically there is only one constituency that Slugger O’Toole gives a damn about. Getting Naomi re-elected is a LetsGetAlongerist priority.

As unionist rivals…UUP and TUV have agreed stand aside to help Gavin Robinson win back the seat for DUP, Slugger O’Toole have sought to neutralise the (not very many) leftist and/or nationalist votes in East Belfast by marginalising the Sinn Féin, SDLP and Green Party candidates.

While Naomi is “scathing”about the DUP-UUP electoral pact, she omits to mention the DUP-Sinn Féin pact, which gives Alliance Party (8 MLAs) two Executive seats while SDLP (14 MLAs) and UUP ((14 MLAs) get one Executive seat each.

Ginger Ninja or just a Hypocrite?

Political Parties Have A High Turnover

Over the weekend, I was thinking about just how many members of SDLP Youth, I have met over the past five or six years. I was thinking about this even before I saw two former SDLP staffers interviewed within about twenty minutes on local News. They have gone on to new employment. I wish them well.

It is of course impossible for SDLP or any other Party for that matter to accomodate ALL of its younger members. They cannot all become MPs, MLAs which is exciting and well paid or even Councillors in the not so exciting or financially rewarding world of the local authority. Dashing around on the back stairs of Stormont, texting staffers from the other parties has at least the illusion of working in the West Wing or House of Cards.

I have been at times amazed by the talent these young SDLP people show….the staffers who work for a MP or MLA or centrally…and of course the regular young foot soldiers who are slogging around eighteen constituencies canvassing.

Attachment to a political Party like SDLP comes in two forms. Rank and file members like me pay £10 a year (well thats Senior Citizen rate) to be a member plus biying the odd ballot ticket or going to a Quiz Night or “A Night At The Races”. It costs us money.

For others, working at Stormont or in a constituency office…the staffers…are actually employed by the Party or a MP or MLA.

These are two very different forms of involvement.

But aside from the coincidence of seeing two former staffers on TV News tonight, I am aware that I have met other folks who are no longer employed by the Party. One is still supportive of the Party. Another wants nothing to do with SDLP. I guess I have seen five or six people (ex-staff or members) who are now in gainful employment in charities etc. I hate the phrase “skill set” but certain skills are transferrable from a Political Party to a more general form of Campaigning.

Why is this? Well I daresay that “personality clashes” in Politics are inevitable and I daresay people with skill sets can look for ways to have a career. And I daresay some have used the SDLP experience in their CVs and SDLP politicians as a reference.

In short, some quite rightly, look on SDLP as a stepping stone. And the fact that talented young people (with a SDLP attitude) can go out into broader fields of helping people ia a good thing.

Certainly there is an even younger group than those I first encountered five or six years ago.

Going outside the narrow field of Party Politics or “bubble” of people who generally think alike into a very different world of charities and a wider remit …it is a very different dynamic.

Looking around, I think SDLP have “lost” some potentially good people.

Hillary Term?

I really want to like Hillary Clinton. She is after all a Democrat…which means she is a lot better than any of the assorted fruit cakes, neo cons and self-styled Christains in the Republican Party.

There does not seem to be a serious Democratic challenger to her. And thats a pity because she will become the nominee by default. No serious debate. No serious scrutiny.

In Europe, we prefer the Democrats. Mainly because they at least speak our political language. But I am not at ease with Money in Politics and I am not at ease with political dynasties.

While Democrats have the best wishes of Europe…with maybe a ratio in their favour of 80:20. The key figure in USA is 49:49 with maybe only 2% swing voters. At least that how it appears from my swivel chair in front of a computer screen.

As a call to arms…”Hillary Clinton…Not as Bad as a Republican” lacks something.

But in the absence of a better Democrat, I wish her well.

Cuba…Close But No Cigar…Yet!

It has to be good news that United States of America and Cuba are actually talking. The fifty odd years of hostility has outlived the Cold War and has frankly taken on the appearance of two elderly neighbours who fell out years ago and neither can quite remember why.

Of course I was 10 years old during the Cuban Missisle Crisis which is probably the closest we have come to Nuclear War. But really the hostility is as much to do with US gangster influence in pre-Revolutionary Havana and American humiliation at the Bay of Pigs.

Cuba has assumed the role of “bad guy”, way out of proportion to its influence. While Cuba remains one of those places that has barbed wire around its postage stamps, it is increasingly difficult to argue that it is somehow worse than USAs ally Saudi Arabia. Nor can it be all that influential in exporting “terrorism” thru South America. USA lost that moral high ground when it overthrew President Allende in Chile.

Arguably the Castro regime is not the most despotic administration on the island of Cuba. Guantanamo Bay remains a blight on the American Conscience.

What was it all about? Was it the Monroe Doctrine? Chicago Gangsters? Communism? Bay of Pigs? Che Guevara? Baseball? Missiles? Watergate “plumbers”? Poisoning Fidel Castro with a cigar? Court cases about sending refugee orphans back to grandparents in Cuba? Hanging Chads in Florida.

Fidel Castro has outlived all those Cold War warriors…Kruschev, Mao, Kennedy, Brezhnev, Thatcher, Nixon, Ceasescu, Reagan.

The dialogue between USA and Cuba is at least twenty five years overdue. Raoul Castro is remarkably dignified about it all. And in fairness to President Obama, he is….liberated from re-election worries…addressing some basic problems.

The Cuban right wing diaspora wont like it. The Florida Cubans seem an unlovely bunch who have just too much to say. They are not the stooges of USA. Rather successive American administrations have been the stooges of right wing Cuban exiles.

Yet I suspect much of the passive Cuban diaspora will welcome the development.

The Castro Government…the Revolution itself…is heading for a soft landing.

Oddly Obama has been neutralised domestically but he is pushing ahead with foreign iniatives. Iran….Cuba….

Hopefully Israel-Palestine is on the list.

The next two years might be interesting.

But what is a keyboard revolutionary to do with all those Ché Tshirts?
