Norn Iron Labour? I Might Be One!

Well the buffoons who slabber about the British Labour Party organising in Norn Iron seem to have a new name. Labour Party Representation Committee or some such nonsense.

To recap, the British Labour Party with the exception of a few weirdos like “our own…our very own Kate Hoey” dont want to organise in Norn Iron. It is simple enough…the Irish Labour Party has the Dublin franchise for European Socialist Parties and SDLP have the Belfast franchise.

Naturally I like to see the Irish Labour Party do well in Republic of Ireland. Naturally I lke to see the English Labour Party do well in England. And I love to see Plaid Cymru do well in Wales and Scottish Nationalist Party do well in Scotland.

Seriously does anyone think that if Ballyclare’s greatest export, Kate Hoey had not ended up in London, she would be bothered being a member of Labour Party in South Antrim. Always struck me as more DUP or UUP material.

Anyway the Norn Iron Labour lot claims to have 1,200 members and 600 supporters in Norn Iron. I have the awful feeling that I might be one. I replied to a British Labour email before the 2015 Westminster Election. And periodically they send me emails. At a conference I attended (Malone House Hotel  10th March 2012), the membership figure was around 170 members.

To avoid any doubt, I have unsubscribed from British Labours mailing list.

Poster Boys & Girls 2016:#4 Christopher Stalford (DUP)

Christopher Stalford: South Belfast.

This poster is located at Lisburn Road/Diamond Gardens. Running mate of Emma Pengelly who was co-opted as a MLA after serving as a Special Advisor to Peter Robinson. Given that DUP have a quota in South Belfast, I have a feeling he could out-vote Ms Pengelly.

Hard Times Come Again No More?

There are people in this world who are decent. There are people in this world who are hard-hearted bastards. It is in many ways about the values we learn and maybe even about seeing our place in the world thru Faith…any Faith…or any unconventional belief system.

Like the man who craved “Salvation” and was told to give half of what he owned away. Not easy…whether as a Christian or a Socialist. Certainly if we owned two houses we could give one away…or two cars…but if we have just two pairs of shoes, it is hard to give one away.

Giving “half” away is more difficult than dropping a pound in the St Vincent de Paul box. Or the Salvation Army box….but mostly it is about dodging the young people in Belfast and Dublin …the “chuggers” (charity muggers) who want us to sign up to support a charity….or avoid eye contact with the women from Eastern Europe who are selling “the Big Issue”.

We are a strange nation. For us oldies, go back just four or five generations and we become undocumented, nameless, faceless. And we prefer it that way. If we really knew more, we would become uncomfortable with the our family histories of poverty, imprisonment, desparation…and the compromises our ancestors made to just survive.

We live in better times. My father was a generous man. Would never pass a person in visible distress.

It is only three or four decades since crossing O’Connell Bridge in Dublin or walking thru Chapel Lane in Belfast was to see “gypsies” (as we then called “travellers”) women…begging often with children. We were all slightly afraid to decline. Now thats a thing of the past.

Except that it is not a thing of the past. The brief respite from facing human misery ended during the Balkan Wars, when the first desparate families arrived in Berlin, Paris and London…and Belfast….and more recently the desperate come from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

We have mixed feelings. We avoid eye contact. That works best or we compromise by giving some small change to the first person we see. Thereafter we can live with our consciences. And we all know the anecdotes from the harder hearted people who have seen the beggars picked up in fancy cars at the end of the day.

And we have heard the stories of the young migrant flower-sellers routinely, verbally-abused by drunken students from Queens University.

We do not like our comfort disturbed.

The decent people become more decent when we become parents. Impossible to see the suffering of an Ethiopian two year old in 1984 except thru the prism of the two year old playing on the floor. We cant give away half…just buy “Do They Know Its Christmas?” And look away.

And yet the Famine is a natural disaster. No Evil Hand in it. So harder to watch the news report of the six year old in India, who begs for a meagre living . He hands over his earnings to the gangmasters and he is given some back for food. The image has haunted me for maybe twenty years.

These things creep up on me. Like the RTE report tonight of the children from Syria…siblings in Istanbul begging in the tourist cafes. Heartbraking. Worse now as I see these things thru the prism of my grandchildren.

What is “Keeping an Eye on the Czar of Russia” all about. My vanity project about meaningless politics, Brexit, sordid civil war, sordid peace….crap.

The real heroes are those who are doing something meaningful. I cant give half. Yes I have more than one pair of shoes and clothes I wore once. And really more shaving foam and razor blades than I need. And theres a container leaving Belfast for Greece next week. And maybe I should send some stuff.

The World is a sick place. The one good thing about Life is that sooner or later it is all over.

Poster Boys & Girls 2016: #2 Paula Bradshaw (Alliance)

Paula Bradshaw: South Belfast.

This poster is located on Ormeau Road, near Eglantine Avenue. Stood as a UUP-Tory in 2010 Westminster Election. Defected to Alliance in late 2011. Her hisband Ian Parsley had been Alliance candidate in 2009 European Election before defecting to UUP-Tory fiasco in 2011. He later rejoined Alliance. Probably only one Alliance quota in South Belfast and running mate, Duncan Morrow is Alliance “royalty” (his late uncle being a much respected Deputy Leader. The internal Alliance battle will be interesting.

West Tyrone: Frustrating But No More

The more I see of West Tyrone, the more I get the feeling of Deja Vu.
To recap, two councillors have left SDLP and are standing as Independents against the sole SDLP flagbearer, Danny McCrossan.
Yet I am now so old that I have seen everything in Politics….twice.

Apparently the Independents are disenchanted about cronyism and the absence of a female candidate on the ticket.
On sheer numbers, SDLP have a quota …based on 2014 council elections and 2015 Westminster. And on the numbers alone, one candidate is reasonable.
And entirely right that Danny McCrossan should be the candidate.
Yet there is more to these things than “numbers”. The internal politics suggests it might be a good idea to run Dan and Dr Jo Deehan. Not to put too fine a point on it…for party unity and to shut her up.
Obviously in the scenario of two candidates and one quota, the allocation of territory is important but on the basis of Dan being the sitting MLA and in most peoples view the better candidate for 2016, then its unlikely that Dr Deehan can out-vote him.
In 2007 in one of the worst examples of vote management, three SDLP candidates secured a quota but could not turn that into a single seat. To be fair, Dr Deehan polled best of the three.
Dr Deehan might have had reasonable expectancy of being seriously considered for 2016 if she had been the Party’s candidate in 2010 (Westminster), 2011 (Assembly) and 2015 (Westminster).
Totally unreasonable to expect to be the candidate in 2016 and almost as unreasonable to be the second candidate.
She is not just Yesterday’s Candidate. She is The Day Before Yesterday’s Candidate.

Yet it was pretty obvious to me in 2011, when Daniel McCrossan spoke on behalf of the Strabane branch, when he picked up the (shared) Dan McAreavey Trophy at the SDLP Conference, that he was a future MLA. The achievement was re-vitalising the branch…but in the context of 2011 and a poor Assembly Election (and a Conference that would elect a new Leader), Dan was very blunt.
The message on the doorsteps was not “we never left the SDLP….the SDLP left us”.
Amid self congratulatory platitudes, it was good to hear. And in fairness to Dan, he can claim to have been instrumental in turning the tide in the years since.
As far as I know Dr Deehan has no beef with SDLP policy. If she had been a candidate at Monday’s manifesto launch, she would have cheered Colum Eastwood to the rafters.
The fact is that in 2011 Joe Byrne took the seat, with little more than 8 per cent of first preference votes. And in an unwinnable seat in 2015. Dan got 15% of the vote…a solid quota.
Is the good work undone?
No….look at 2011, when Eugene McMenamin Strabane based ex SDLP MLA took over 1,000 votes.
Can Strabane-based councillor Patsy Kelly top that? Aided by the SDLP label, he polled 800 votes in 2014 “locals”.
Likewise in 2011, Patrick McGowan (Independent) got around 1,000 votes. He might be the same Patrick McGowan who has signed Dr Deehans nomination papers this time around.
Of around 3,000 votes (including Alliance 800) excluded at the same stage of a count in 2011, a third went to Joe Byrne, a third to other candidates and a third not transferred.
So really, 2011 to 2015 is the yardstick.
Dan will get a higher percentage than Joe in 2011 but below his own total of 2015.
The lower Kelly vote and the lower Deehan vote will transfer to SDLP.
Of course, Colum Eastwood will play a role here with appearances in the constituency and TV appearances.
But most of the work has to be done by Dan. His high profile in the SDLP campaign…like Monday nights confident TV performance will help.
I am sure he is frustrated by it all. But unlike me….he needs to avoid rhetoric like “The Day Before Yesterday’s Woman” (its a damned good line though isnt it?). He needs to reflect…sadness, disappointment, respect for an excellent former colleague and not appear angry.
He will come thru to be elected.

UTV Election Debate

So the Big Debate with five Party Leaders…Arlene Foster (DUP), Mike Nesbitt (UUP) Martin McGuinness (Sinn Féin), David Ford (Alliance) and Colum Eastwood (SDLP).

I enjoyed it despite it seeming very low-key. These Debates now seem to be part of the Election process itself. The whole point is not to screw up (nearly) live on TV.

So it is a “defensive” game for those with most to lose and an “attacking” game for those with most to gain.

The après-Debate is as much part of the process as the Debate itself. The Party “Tweeters” follow the lead of their Party “Spinners”. The pattern is always the same. Five Parties will claim that their man/woman won and the others lost.

So ….SDLP seem to think that Colum Eastwood was the best performer tonight. More to the point, a lot of neutrals seem to think he won.

In part, this is expected. The advisors would have told Martin McGuinness and Arlene Foster “dont screw up”. Both seemed nervy and seem uncomfortable when forced to defend their joint while trying to persuade people they have no connexion at all.

Mike Nesbitt did very well. In part because, he is not part of the governing coalition.

I am happy to report that David Ford performed poorly. He looked like a man who knew he would be resigning as Alliance Leader and going to House of Lords in the very near future. Alliance are guaranteed the Justice Ministry. Thanks to a shabby deal, it props up DUP-Sinn Féin. With the number of Departments being reduced, Alliance might be the big loser next month.

SDLP…Colum will have done himself a lot of good. His best lines have all been rehearsed over recent weeks. And he looked at ease.

These things are morale boosters. And SDLP feels pretty good tonight.

Slugger O’Toole…Is There A Doctor In The House?

“Two days ago, the SDLP ventured west of the Bann to launch its manifesto….”

The words of Dr David McCann on Slugger O’Toole. Is there a more obvious example of the metrotextual windbaggery that is the trademark of this message board?

In the world of Slugger O’Toole, nothing ever happens outside Belfast and North Down. As I pointed out in my post on the Launch, neither Dr McCann or Alan Meban were present at the Launch.

It seems neither could be arsed to show up. Less than six months ago, Dr McCann told his followers that he had never been to Armagh.

I wish I could say that I am sorry that SDLP inconvenienced Slugger O’Toole by holding its Launch in a venue convenient to all SDLP members. Strangely SDLP managed to launch the manifesto without the help of Dr David McCann and Slugger O’Toole.

SDLP Manifesto Launch

Dungannon, County Tyrone…launch of SDLP Maifesto.

Interesting that over recent months, SDLP has been “on the road”. The launch of the new SDLP Spokesperson Team took place in An Cultúrlann in West Belfast, the Party Conference in Derry, the Campaign Launch in an arts centre in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter…and now the Manifesto in Dungannon.
The great advantage of having a SDLP event in Dungannon is that David McCann and Alan Meban wont be there to report for Slugger O’Toole. Taking Politics away from the “metro-textual” bubble of South Belfast and into real places is a verygood idea.
The cumulative effect of set-pieces is important. Not only does it maximise the publicity, it allows Party members to engage with the Leadership and each other. It creates and maintains a vibe and the conversations around a cup of tea or coffee are as important as the speeches.
image

Each set-piece gives Colum Eastwood a chance to deliver an address to Party faithful. And each speech seems fine-tuned and carefully crafted. And importantly it is all ahead of Leaders Debates. Colum has clearly prepared well…these events…addressing SDLP branches and being visible in sixth form debates in schools and in local walkabouts in Lurgan, Cookstown, LIsburn etc.
It breeds a sense of confidence within SDLP …as do the reports from canvas, optimistic reports in part due to more people knocking on doors than in the recent past.

Of course, Dungannon has Civil Rights connexions going back to the first march from Coalisland to Dungannon in 1968. And on a personal note, I lived there from 1978 to 1982 and I remember that this location for a SDLP event was once heavily militarised. The change in 2016 is amazing…a reminder of how far we have come.

The substance of Colum’s speech was that DUP and Sinn Féin are merely satisfied that Stormont exists but we have the right to expect more. The theme of Fairness was emphasised. West Belfast gets just 1% of the Investment “Budget”. And 101,000 children are brought up in poverty. OVer 50% of families have no Savings.
Forced emigration is about more than Economics…communities lose out when they are deprived of the energy of young people. There are too many parents making trips to airports.
The plan to invest £250 for each child born…a figure to be topped up at least once before the child leaves full time education seems like a good one.
The point that SF have never taken up an economic ministry…and have “re-partioned the north economically and had their eye wiped by DUP” will go well in the Leaders Debate.

Working tpwards a United Ireland rather than lip service…a broad based commossion to look into it. A Dublin based Ministry for the North?
SDLP will not be entering Government unless there is a committment to Fairness. The broad hint that SDLP is considering Opposition as much as Government might play well with disenchanted voters who are fed up with the current Stormont set-up…it will be interesting how that plays out.
All in all…another good day out.
