Seamus Heaney RIP

Sad to learn of the death of Seamus Heaney, Nobel Literature lureate from 1995 and surely one of THE great poets.
We have all read his books and he was THE LAUREATE of at least one Norn Iron tribe. …the South Derry farming community where he was born. By extension he spoke to other tribes of nationalist farmers in West Tyrone and South Armagh and by extension the urban nationalist in Derry where he was educated at St Columbs College (NOT Christian Brothers that I …for some daft reason said originally…thanx Ronan)
And by extension he spoke to urban republicans at The Pondersosa (St Josephs) in Belfast where he taught.
And he spoke to the young educated “Catholic” class at Queens University where he later taught.
The Malone Road Artsy Crowd will try and claim him as one of their own.
So will Oxford University.
But lets get this clear. He was of US. He spoke literally and figuratively for the Croppies.
He spoke for those of us who have ever seen a child in a coffin.
He spoke for every young Catholic boy going thru (British) scholarship education, who brought his father his lunch. a father doing back-breaking work.
And most of all he spoke for us…those of us in Norn Iron who assert our Irishness…when he declined to appear in an anthology of “British” poets.

“Be advised.My passports Green
no Glass of ours was raised
To toast the Queen”

He got that right. Over on Slugger O’Toole…Mick might don his culture clothes, Dimpleby the Oxbridge-BBC clothes and Sheldon might even don his South Derry clothes ( not that he has ever done that before) and we will have maybe three or more obituaries ( more than James Kelly got) and there will be a tug of love for Seamus Heaney that will claim him as belonging to us all….like a poetic Rory McIlroy. But that is the usual letsgetalongerist bollox.

He was an Irish poet. There will be no reading of his works at the Twaddell Avenue Civil Rights Camp. But no doubt Peter Robinson will feel obliged to say “something”.
Yet for me…Seamus Heaney spoke for every man who ever watched his wife, the Mother of the Groom (yes Mrs FitzjamesHorse I am talking about YOU) at a Wedding.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.

SDLP Headquarters

SDLP HQ is on the Ormeau Road in South Belfast.
image

For the record, the first HQ office (1973) I recall was in College Square North, a few doors from the “old” Ulster Museum Building.
At one point, there was an office near Queens University at Mount Charles (1980s).

Constituency Offices…#15 Dr Alasdair McDonnell MP

Dr Alasdair McDonnell is Member of Parliament and MLA for South Belfast. This is possibly the most subtle of all constituency offices.
image

Alasdair, SDLP Party Leader is now retired from his practice as a medical doctor on the Ormeau Road. As I understand it, he was not actually based at this health centre.
There is no signage outside. A medical practice occupies the upper floors and Alasdair’s office is the Ground Floor.
I actually spoke to Alasdair’s staff about this. It actually works well. The key thing is that everybody knows where it is. A considerable number of the local population visit the Health Centre regularly. The “foot fall”…people who visit the Health Centre and then visit the SDLP office for advice on issues…is an important part of this office.
Traditionally, South Belfast is viewed as a middle class area dominated by Queens University but it has some deprived areas, notably around Donegall Pass (loyalist) and Markets (nationalist). Both of these communities use the Health Centre and both seem to use the Advice Centre.
The make-up of Assembly seats in South Belfast is important. SDLP hold two Assembly seats, Sinn Fein, Alliance, DUP and UUP. Alasdair holds the Westminster seat…and in City Council terms, its a good SDLP area with two councillors in Laganbank and two councillors in Balmoral.
The Health Centre IS a form of neutral territory. It would be inappropriate to have signage, promoting a political party.
And yet there are certain advantages. A constituent from a loyalist background…or indeed Sinn Fein might not want to be “seen” entering a SDLP office.
A considerable amount of the constituency problems handled here are from from across the demographic divide.
The other SDLP office in South Belfast is on the Lisburn Road and is run by Conall McDevitt MLA.

Constituency Offices…#14 Alex Attwood MLA

The office of Alex Attwood MLA,SDLP West Belfast is on the Stewartstown Road, not far from Casement Park.
image.

Not totally convinced about this one. It of course serves the entire West Belfast area (the SDLP has one MLA and two councillors in Sinn Feins strongest area).

Constituency Offices…#13 Alex Maskey

Sinn Fein seem to make a distinction between a “constituency” office and an “advice centre”. This of course facilitates any MLA ( Paul Maskey, Willie Clarke, Conor Murphy, Francie Molloy,Michelle Gildernew, Gerry Adams, Martina Anderson, Pat Doherty) resigning the Assembly seat and being replaced by a “co-option”.

The advice centre on the Ormeau Road in South Belfast, has a large poster in the window featuring Alex Maskey and his team of councillors from Laganbank and Balmoral…including our “Lord” Mayor, Mairtin O’ Muilleoir.

Chris Lyttle Day…A Public Holiday

I wont be at Stormont today to hear Chris Lyttle MLA (Alliance) say anyhthing interesting about Martin Luther King.
Martin Luther King born on 15th January….has Martin Luther King Day (Third monday in January). There really should be a Chris Lyttle Day to honour his committment (and the Alliance Party committment) to Civil Rights.
Interestingly Mr Lyttles birthday is 19th January. Maybe a joint MLK-CL Day is in order.
It seems downright unfair that Stevie Wonder sings songs about Martin Luther King but doesnt sing songs about Chris Lyttle.

So Stormont today. Good luck if youre going.
“I Have A Dream” Martin Luther King (1963).
“I Have A Vol-au-Vent” Chris Lyttle (2013).

Chris Lyttle Has A Dream

Congratulations to Chris Lyttle MLA of Alliance Party for hosting a reception at Stormont tomorrow to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech.
Hmmm the problem with being as old as I am….I know a spoofer when I see one.
The Alliance Party and Civil Rights?
Any future Alliance leaders get involved in that campaign?
Now theres a thought.
Wasnt Martin Luther King an opponent of Gerrymandering?
So lets consider this?
UUP 16 MLAs…90,000 votes….ONE EXECUTIVE SEAT.
SDLP 14 MLAs …93,000 votes….ONE EXECUTIVE SEAT.
ALLIANCe 8 MLAs…52,000 votes…TWO EXECUTIVE SEATS.

I dont know if Chris Lyttle MLA regards one or other or both DUP and Sinn Fein as convincing Civil Rights supporters. But Alliance are indebted to them for the gift of that second seat.
For sheer chutzpah or sheer bloody cheek, its hard to beat the Alliance Party.

The Myth Of “Civic Society”

One of the great myths of the Peace Process, the Good Friday Agreement and the Conflict Resolutionists for fifteen years has been that there is something called CIVIC SOCIETY.
As Politicians dont really like the notion…as it tends to undermine rather than “enhance” the political process, any concept of a Civic Forum has been quietly shelved.
Of course that is par for the course. Dealing with the Past,Victims, Bill of Rights, Irish Language Act…all foreseen in the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and all very obviously shelved.
The only people who believe in Civic Society are the people who think they are part of it. Sadly they are helped in the delusion by people who really should know better. Civic Society is politics outside the “conventional frame” …people in Trade Unions, local and national groups that could not get elected but feel a kind of entitlement to be in “power”.
As a Democrat…I oppose them.
There are two groups of people who have detached themselves from the political process. One is a recognisable UNDERCLASS living almost in a feral fashion, drinking Buckfast, sniffing glue and involved in petty crime in socially deprived areas.
The second group is the OVERCLASS….middle class people, too posh to vote in the squalid sectarian cess pit of Norn Iron but holding a bizarre belief in their intelligence and/or wealth entitles them to privelege.

They have modelled themselves as CIVIC SOCIETY. Of course the Good Friday Agreement stated that there would be a CIVIC FORUM where people outside “normal” politics would meet and advise our political leaders.
Thankfully the Intelligensia were not smart enough to realise that this was just a part of the Creative Ambiguity that is the central plank in the Peace Process. No politician was ever likely to agree to it.
Of course, I am no great lover of the DUP-Sinn Fein dominated Executive which has over-indulged the Alliance Party and sought to marginalise UUP and SDLP. DUP and Sinn Fein intend to help each other stay in power.
We live as Mark Durkan (the former SDLP Leader put it) in a one party state with an Orange and Green wing.
But whether we like it or not, politicians are actually elected.
What exactly would the Civic Forum be …other than an unelected second chamber filled with the usual suspects from the Golden Halo of Do-Goodery. Far too many of them in Norn Iron already, whinging about how there is no “proper” politics in Norn Iron….while tucking into the vol-au-vents at any event hosted by a DUP or Sinn Fein Minister in the Long Gallery at Stormont.
Who would the Civic Forum actually be other than people drawn from the “voluntary” sector?…a bloated sector in Norn Iron.
The Churches.
Well ALL of the Churches enjoy the separation of Church and State. GOD and Mammon and all that. No institutional Church…while committed to the right “faith” values…will betray the views of the people in the pews.
While it is fashionable for Conflict Resolutionists to denounce apparent inaction of institutional churches and praise individual maverick churchmen…the simple fact is that church-goers are drawn from communities, inner city and suburban Belfast, small towns and villages across Norn Iron.
I know a lot of Catholic churchmen. Some are apolitical. The vast majority are SDLP and Sinn Fein voters. None that I know vote Alliance.
The Church of Ireland, reflecting their English cousins tends to be UUP or broadly unionist.
Presbyterians view DUP with suspicion but the balance of probability is that they vote across the unionist spectrum.
Trade Unions…the most cowardly of all organisations in Norn Iron. They shamelessly protected the interests of their (Protestant) members in Belfast industry over the interests of civil rights such as fair employment. Of course the same thing happened in car factories in the English West Midlands where shop stewards operated colour bars to placate their racist members. Not exactly the International Brotherhood of Man.
Because of Norn Irons reality that socialist parties (SDLP and Sinn Fein) are “nationalist” and the capitalist parties (DUP and UUP) are “unionist”, trade union leaders dare not be seen to support nationalism….so they join Labour (NI) or the Workers Party….essentially non-parties without any hope of election….but it makes them look good.
A “socialist” party which cannot get elected is a luxury that working class people cannot afford. Of course SDLP…sister party to both Irish Labour Party and British Labour Party is the “natural” Labour Party in Norn Iron but the trade unions here will do absolutely nothing to help their fellow socialists…but of course they will shamelessly lobby the SDLP. In a word….HYPOCRITES.
Ah Women…they are another group that Conflict Resolutionists want to promote. But 52% of Norn Iron are female. For the most part …they vote. And they vote DUP, Sinn Fein, SDLP, UUP, Alliance, TUV and Green. Is there something unique that a Womans Group be given a place in the Forum.
Are they more representative than….
Ruth Patterson DUP, Arlene Foster DUP, Michelle O’Neill SF, Sue Ramsey SF, Margaret Ritchie SDLP, Dolores Kelly SDLP, Joanne Dobson UUP etc.
Is Pro Equal Marriage, Alliance MLA, Anna Lo, more or less representative than her anti Equal Marriage colleague Judith Cochrane?
Are the Pro-Life women praying outside the Marie Stopes Clinic more or less representative of ” women” than the Pro-Choice women inside it?
Do universities have a part to play in the Forum?
NO …ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Until 1969… Queens University Belfast graduates elected FOUR members to the Stormont Parliament. It was rightly considered a democratic advance when these seats were abolished. Can people really consider it a good thing that representatives from QUB and Univ of Ulster sit in a second chamber (of sorts)?
But how would Universities decide who represents them?
When was the last time a QUB academic did anything radical?
Certainly in 2008 to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Civil Rights movement at Queens University…QUB, with absolutely no sense of shame or irony congratulated itself on its achievements.
Unless my recollection is faulty, I dont recall that QUB was at the forefront of Civil Rights.
We do of course have the positive example of Tyrone Guthrie, Anglo-Irish Man of Letters, theatre director who became Chancellor of QUB in or around 1960. Unionists love one of our own as Guthrie was thought to be..who makes an impact on the world stage… Guthrie was an academic Rory McIlroy and actually defeated the “Duke of Abercorn to become Chancellor.
Unfortunately it turned out that Guthrie was actually a nationalist and publicly called for the border to be abolished. That didnt go down well…but in July 1969, he was wheeled out on BBC Norn Iron to lecture the people of Norn Iron…a very bizarre moment when the Chancellor of the (then) only university REPRIMANDED people …to catch themselves on before it was too late.
Just a month later…the Troubles began.
Guthrie could not bring himself to do “something” for Norn Irons Fiftieth Anniversary (1971) but basically he told Stormont “over my dead body”….which was prophetic….he did actually die in 1971.
But what exactly has any Queens University and other University figures done since then.
They have avoided Politics but not avoided the vol au vents.
Rick, Deirdre, Pete and Dom …more likely to be on youtube or TV or at any university in the world talking about Conflict Resolution…exchanging papers, writing the books. But is it a serious contribution deserving of a place in a Civic Forum? No.

Civic Forum…daft idea.

Universities Promote Intolerance?

Here is a thought. Especially for those of you about to start University or looking thru a list of modules on your course.
Are Universities promoting INTOLERANCE?
Well no self respecting Academic would agree with this proposition.
They would say that I am being provocative and contrary…and they would say that I always am…its what Old FJH used to do in early morning tutorials when young students were too hung over or lacking in confidence to make a contribution.

But consider this. A person applies to do Medicine at a university but openly declares that he is a pagan who does not believe in Science and prefers Nature- based cures. Or she declares she is a Jehovahs Witness who would notfacilitate a blood transfusion.
Not a suitable candidate.
Or what about a student who is an Athiest and decides he would like to study Theology. How would he be perceived if he went all “Stephen Fry” in a tutorial?
Choosing a Course at University or even just a module….is about buying into something…not actually challenging it.
The student who chooses to study the Irish Language is probably buying into something that his fellow students and lecturers already believe.
It SHOULD be possible to study the Irish Language, merely as an academic subject and believe that the Language should not be subsidised or promoted in any way? Or indeed buying into a bigger theme of Nationalism or Republicanism.

Taking British History….can we deduce anything from the student who is passionate about the British Raj?
Can a young man sign up for a course on Twentieth Century Feminism and on the first day when fellow students are introducing themselves to the class…he announces that he is opposed to womans suffrage?
Of course you might read this Blog and say that these are absurd examples.
But not quite. In my experience, lecturers on the “European Union” are europhiles. How these lecturers would react to a class full of UKIP members…thats a good question.
Of course Europhiles are TOLERANT. Europhobes are INTOLERANT KNUCKLE DRAGGERS.
We know this to be true because its told to us by Academics who teach European Integration.
What happens at University is NOT Conventional Wisdom being challenged. Rather it is often Conventional Wisdom and Conventional Prejudice being re-enforced.
There is no point in living in Rome and fighting with the Pope.
No point in going to Harvard, Oxford, Trinity….Queens ….and fighting with the lecturers.
Except of course YOUR DIGNITY.
There are no Student Grants. Just Loans. You are paying for this EDUCATION.
Of course it helps if you are going back to University at age 53 and are unemployable anyway, thru ill health. All you want is the Degree…not a “good” Degree.
If you dont want to be part of a smug elite, churning out more of the same then be RADICAL.
DARE TO BE DIFFERENT.
So Kudos….to anyone starting a course in (say) Conflict Resolution and introduces himself/herself by saying “I dont believe any of this nonsense”

Here We Go! Here We Go! Here We Go!

So in a few hours the 2013-14 Premiership Season gets under way. Tonight some teams will have three points on the board. Some will have one point. Some will have none.
There will be at least one first day shock, hopefully not Manchester United at Swansea.
Its an unequal contest.
There are really three different leagues within the Premiership. The race to the title involves at most seven clubs(Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Everton).
There will be a race to avoid relegation (Cardiff City, Hull City, Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Norwich City and Southampton).
And a race from Mediocrity to Mid Table Respectability ( maybe even with a minor Trophy). It will involve Newcastle United, West Ham United, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Swansea City and Fulham).
One of the top group will struggle and the word “crisis” will be used. A top manager will be boooed by disappointed fans. One of the middle group will flatter to deceive in the early part of the season. One of the traditionally safe teams will struggle and flirt with the bottom group. And one of the bottom group will pleasantly surprise us.

The Premiership….its all about money. At Manchester United and Liverpool, American owners talk about “franchise”. Chelsea are bank-rolled by a Russian oligarch and Manchester City bank-rolled by Gulf sheiks.
And yet the pre-season is dominated by three players.
Luis Saurez at Liverpool.
Gareth Bale at Tottenham Hotspur.
Wayne Rooney at Manchester United.
All want away.
Saurez is Liverpools best player. Bale is Tottenhams best player. Rooney is NOT Manchester Uniteds best player.
Saurez is a disgrace. Liverpool were foolish to back him in the Racism Row two seasons ago. No respectable team should sign him. As Arsenal have a legitimate claim to being Englands most respectable football club, it is surprising to see Arsenal leac the chase for his signature. Saurez of course has a contract with Liverpool but it means little.
Gareth Bales contract at Totteham Hotspur means more. Real Madrid will buy it for up to £80 million. spurs should grab it. They did not finish in the Top Four, losing out on Europe. The bottom line is that Bale might be the best player in England but the players that Spurs can buy with £80 million should be enough to get into the Top Four.
Wayne Rooney…dont start me. I am far too old to hero-worship footballers. Rooney always LOOKS unfit. Overweight. He might still be able to turn a match but not as often as in his first few years at Old Trafford.
Three years ago he was “unsettled” and persuaded to stay with a pay rise. He got the cash but lost the affection of the United fans. Wanting away for a second time….well good riddance.
I am a pessimist. In two decades Manchester United have only finished below first or second on one occasion when they finished third.
Really the tragedy is that finishing in the Top Four and qualifying for the BIGGER European Champions League is as important as actually winning the Premiership.
Dropping out of the Top Four would be a disaster.
Spurs (fifth) have spent money and will have more to spend.
Liverpool look better. Everton dont look as good without David Moyes.
Arsenal and Manchester United have need to spend…but while Arsenal might get Saurez, United seem to be missing their targets. New manager David Moyes starts under pressure. Will United have the same hunger without Ferguson.
Chelsea have spent money.
Manchester City have spent more.
Manchester City look to be favourites.
As always….hoping for the best and fearing the worst.
