Know Your Journalists…#1Henry McDonald

Great tweet from Henry McDonald, the former “sticky” who writes for The Guardian.

“Ireland fans should chant to Croats: Ye can stick your Medjugore up your a***!”.

Apart from the fact that it is a bit tacky and a little offensive to Catholics…..Mr McDonald doesnt seem to know that Medjugore is actually in ……..Bosnia Herzegovina.

I pointed this out to Mr McDonald and Mr McDonald points out that

“but it ain’t a Bosnian shrine and it was Croat militia and nuns who chased away Muslim refugees from it”.

I take it this is why Mr McDonald is not a foreign correspondent.

Constituency Offices…#9 Sydney Anderson MLA

Thomas Street in Portadown. I am not wxactly sure that it is Sydney Anderson’s constituency office as the sign says DUP Local Government Office.

The layout is similar to that of party colleague, Stephen Moutray MLA (Lurgan). A counter inside.

Posters in the window include “A Decade of Centenaries” (seemingly a booklet concentrating on unionist centenaries) and “Shared Memories” (seemingly about the old RUC). As an example of DUP “outreach”, there is a poster detailing band parades in the summer……..all the way to October.

Anyone But Rio?

Let’s be honest…..we all knew that John Terry and Rio Ferdinand would not BOTH be included in the England squad for the European Football Championships which begin this weekend.

There was too much bad blood. When Roy Hodgson, the new England manager announced the squad there could have been little surprise that John Terry was included and Rio Ferdinand omitted. I say (I am a Manchester United fan) that John Terry is the better player, has had a better season. Frankly I have never been a big fan of Rio Ferdinand. He is too inconstent for my liking.

Clearly this was the main talking point about the original squad but Roy Hodgson could legitimately get away with claiming that he made the choice on “football reasons”. I think that John Terry was always 95% certain to be included and Rio Ferdinand 70% to be included………and so might (at a stretch) be considered a border-line case.

Since the original selection two players have had to drop out thru injury. The replacement of Gareth Barry by centre back Phil Jagielka seems reasonable enough and does not undermine Hodgson’s original decision to leave out Ferdinand. But Gary Cahill’s withdrawal and his replacement by Martin Kelly, another defender undermines the position which Hodgson has taken. Just how many central defenders are higher up the England ladder than Ferdinand.

I tend to agree with George Cohen, the England full back from the 1960s who states  that “football reasons” can be extended to include players who simply have too much bad blood between them. Team morale is arguably more important than choosing BOTH players. Of course this does raise ethical questions about……possibly ……..which player might be considered a better role model.

The point is that the England strategy of selecting one of the two players and riding out the controversy might have worked but two withdrawals thru injury and a seeming unwillingness to select Rio Ferdinand has made the line coming out from Wembley harder to believe.

Ken Barlow And Prince Charles

Ken Barlow and Prince Charles are the best known characters in British Soap Opera.

Ken Barlow has been appearing in “Coronation Street” since 1960. I confess that it is my favourite soap but now dated so much that it seems to be happening in a bubble. It is a relic of Manchester in the 1950s (not much different from Belfast in the 1950s). I dont actually recall cobbled streets in my part of Belfast but for the fortieth anniversary episode (broadcast live) in 1960 had Coronation Street’s cobbles preserved as achitectural heritage. I think the programme itself is being preserved in the same way.

Back in 1960, Ken Barlows father, Frank, was a postman and Harry Hewitt was a bus driver.Occupations….which like a civilization has gone with the wind. In 2012 everybody who lives in Coronation Street actually works in Coronation Street…..the garage, the Rovers Return, Roy’s Rolls, Street Cabs  and the “knicker factory”. Discounting the stereotypical Asian shopkeeper, there are no regular black faces……not unusual in fictional Weatherfield but a bit unusual in factual Manchester/Salford. The scriptwriters thought that ill educated characters like Stan Ogden and Albert Tatlock might be revealed as racists so best to avoid the situation.

The scriptwriters discussed introducing a black family in the early 1970s but decided against. Coronation Street does not do well with the modern world. It is a 1950s vision, romanticised a little…..kitchen sink drama cos “its grim up north”. It is the world of the Wakes Week, coach trip to Blackpool, the Busby Babes and the cotton mill.

Ken Barlow has seen it all. William Roache (the actor who has played Ken since 1960) once decsribed himself as the “caretaker” of the character. For scriptwriters come and go and necessarily with fifty adult characters, some are asked to do things inconsistent with their character..to further the plot.

But Actors are different from the parts they play. Ken Barlow is a harmless old 70ish bleeding heart liberal…..he was jailed for a week in the early 1960s after taking part in a demonstration against nuclear weapons. Much married…even more lovers…Ken’s marriage to Valerie Tatlock was a fairy tale event. She later died…..an accident with an electrical appliance. But too easy to confuse Ken Barlow with William Roache. Roache is an 80 year old actor, a leading light in the Cheshire Conservative Party….a big fan of Margaret Thatcher.

And that is the problem with soap operas….and actors. We confuse Fact and Fiction. Indeed we are asked to do so.

Which brings me to Prince Charles, a character in the Royal Soap Opera. He is played by Charles Windsor. It is easy to confuse the fictional Prince with the real life actor. He has played the role for all his life. He has been a child actor, a juvenile actor and an adult actor.

Prince Charles is Prince Charming. But it increasingly looks like Charles Windsor has been miscast, a spoiled child actor who was cute enough up to his becoming Prince of Wales (sic) in the summer of 1969. Then routinely deflowering young women in the English aristocracy (essentially Royal groupies) until told to settle down and breed for England.

The marriage of Charles and Diana was the least convincing plot-line in the history of the Royal “soap”. In character Prince Charles is expected to care about the environment and engage with young multi-ethnic folks from the inner cities thru his Princes Trust…but actually the actor Charles Windsor is part and parcel of the shooting and fishing, tweedy cousinage of aristocratic England.

There is a lot of strange casting in the Royal Soap. The part of the Duke of Edinburgh is played by an Teutonic-Greek called Philip Mountbatten (well thats his stage name) who is little more than an economic migrant from southern Europe. The part of the Colonel in Chief of the Royal Irish Rifles is played by Randy Andy Windsor, a golf club bore. The least convincing Royal Marine in its history was played by Edward Windsor.

Of course the Queen is Head of the Church of England……and while Elizabeth Windsor might be convincing in a role which is not exactly sound in Theology, it is hard to see most of the Windsor family being at ease with the role.

Of course, rather like William Roache sees himself as caretaker of Ken Barlow’s character……guarding against unlikely uncharacteristic plot-lines, then surely Charles Windsor is entitled to do the same. Surely the Royal scriptwriters are working on a plot where the Crown passes from The Queen to Prince William. It would be popular with viewers but not exactly consistent with the theme of the Soap……monarchy. Indeed if Prince Charles woke up and found Lady Di in the shower and realised it was all a dream ….it would only match Dallas for inconsistency.

Soap Operas NEED inconsistency. Princess Anne, being divorced could not re-marry in the Church of England so became Scottish for the day, marrying in Scotland where seemingly GOD is not quite so fussy about the rules.

Rather like Corrie, it has been difficult to bring black folks into the cast. Apparently the Queen Mother, the nations favourite grandmother expressed some displeasure at seeing black faces in the Household Cavalry and Guards regiments. So obviously they have to be air-brushed out of the cast until more acceptable to the other characters such as………..er the Duke of Edinburgh perhaps.

The Royal Jubilee this weekend……..celebrating sixty years of the Queen ……is a bit like a live episode celebrating Coronation Street and Eastenders. Happily the cast was not culled by an incident on the River Thames….like the Weatherfield Tram Disaster of 2010 which took out Molly and Ashley.

The U-boat in the Thames was actually some German relatives of the “Royal Family”.

Referendum: Victory For Fear

So the Referendum on Fiscal Stability/Austerity was passed 60:40.

There are, I suppose reasonable arguments to be made FOR the Treaty. And I suppose reasonable arguments to be made against the Treaty. Long Live Reason.

Yet it strikes me that people did not vote Yes or No “reasonably”. I suspect most Yes voters were motivated by Fear. I suspect most No voters were motivated by Pig-Headedness.

It seems there is a disconnect between the “established parties” and the voters. With 85% of the nations politicians urging a Yes vote, it is maybe surprising that 40% of voters voted against. The No Campaign was led by Leftists and Sinn Féin. Opinion Polls suggest that SF is the second most popular party in the Republic.

It would be reasonable to assume that Labour Party could not persuade many of its own voters and will likely lose ground to those who campaigned for a No vote. Likewise Fiann Fáil is vulnerable. Sinn Fein is clearly strengthened by the Referendum. Six months ago the Presidential Election was, at best, an adequate result for Sinn Féin but the Referendum has left them the leading voice of Opposition.

Olympic Update

At the moment, Ireland’s Olympic team has 53 people. There are actually 54 qualifiers but four qualified in the Womens Marathon and only three can go to London. Maria McCambridge is the unlucky lady. Gladys Ganiel-O’Neill who, at the moment has a “B” standard time in the Marathon will not be considered.

The current breakdown is Athletics 17, Swimming 4, Cycling 4, Equestrian 5, Boxing 6, Judo 1, Gymnastics 1, Triathlon 1, Sailing 8, Canoeing 3, Rowing 1, Badminton 1, Shooting 1.

The latest qualifier is Sanita Puspure (Rowing).

The next month which will include the European Championships will be intense for Track and Field athletes. Its likely that some more will make the “A” standard. Realistically an Open Water swimmer Chris Bryan might qualify thru the final event to be held in Portugal in June. There is hope that a Dressage rider and possibly two Eventing riders being promoted from the reserve list, if (as expected) some qualified riders are not sent.

There is likely also to be an invitation for boxer Joe Ward who is the highest ranked non-qualifier in his division. Gavin Noble is almost certain to finish in the list of qualified Triathletes, joining Aileen Morrison who is already qualified. Scott Evans (Badminton) might also receive a late entry to London.

Wolf (sic) Tone And Sinn Fein

I have recently made cryptic references to Sinn Féin TALKING about Wolfe Tone but being unable to spell his name. In todays Irish News, Diana Rusk reveals all….well most.

Last week in the small village of Derrymacash leaflets were distributed by Sinn Fein noting an advice clinic would be held in the local GAA Club…the Wolfe Tones. But local residents were left to scratch their heads…because the residents, many of them members of a fast growing club realised that the GAA cannot host such events. While it is safe to assume that all members of the Club, situated in the nationalist Loughside DEA in Craigavon Council area. Effectively it is made up of four small villages…..Derrymacash/Aghacommon, Derrytrasna, Aghagallon (all nationalist and where the local GAA clubs are the main social hub) and the Bannfoot area (unionist).

The 2011 local council election shows. Sinn Féin on 60% of the vote. SDLP get 30% of the vote. DUP 7%. Three of the five councillors for the area are SF. The other two are SDLP.

While many residents took concerns to the Wolfe Tones Club, clearly residents/club members also brought Dolores Kelly MLA into the story. And Dolores has quite properly run with it, contacted the Ulster Council of the GAA who have contacted the Club, reminding them of the rules. The event has now been cancelled. A massive own goal by Sinn Féin.

And quite properly Dolores has publicised the story thru Diana Rusk in todays Irish News. Cllr Mairead O’Dowd (a sister in law of John O’Dowd MLA???) appears a little ungracious. She is blaming the SDLP for depriving the local electorate of an opportunity to talk to their political representatives. Cllr O’Dowd appears to live in the area and quite possibly might be a member of the Wolfe Tones GAC…….but she has embarrassed both her Party and the local Club. Quite possibly the booking of the club might have been made in a personal capacity but the GAA tends to enforce these rules rather well.

In the interests of disclosure I should state that I am a member of the GAA but NOT a member of Wolfe Tones GAC. One of the great joys about being in a GAA club is that there is no overt party politics. Essentially there is no big deal about sports clubs hosting “political” events. After all on 18th May,Strabane Cricket Club hosted “A Night at the Races” fundraiser for the SDLP. I dont suppose anyone thinks of it as an endorsement of SDLP policies by Strabanes cricketing community. The GAA is extremely sensitive to any charges like this. And mostly it works…not least to the benefit of the GAA and its members. And indeed nationalists.

Actually thats not entirely true. It tends to depend on the Club. Back in the 1960s, the GAA in Belfast was the preserve of men of the Old Decency…..Confraternity men, pioneers, Conradh na Gaeilge men. Nationalists certainly but usually without Party label. As a young drummer boy aged about twelve, I remember the Great Roddy McCorley/Seán South Controversy at Casement Park. Our band leader was advised that it was ok to play “Roddy McCorley” but NOT “Seán South from Garryowen”. One is a national song (good) and the other is a rebel song (bad)……..so we played Roddy McCorley …….but er the music is actually the same. Well in fairness I wasnt much of a drummer and everything I played sounded the same.

The simple fact is that militant republicans, ex-prisoners were very often (but not always) Paddy-Come-Latelys to the GAA (and Irish language)..certainly in West Belfast. Certainly I recall a man who started to appear at West Belfast club matches and was very vociferous supporter even though he seemed to know nothing about the rules. The men from the Old Decency referred to him as “Offside” or “Handball”.

So how on earth did Upper Bann Sinn Féin make such an elementary mistake as trying to stage an advice centre in a GAA club. Clearly they did not think it thru. Carelessness? Arrogance? Both? But I tend to think of it as further evidence that Sinn Féin is disconnecting with those it professes to represent.

My view remains that ten years ago, the SDLP (in government) lost the plot a little. Clearly the Good Friday Agreement was under pressure from SF and DUP and many mainstream nationalists/republicans did not trust the SDLP to negotiate in their interests and shifted to SF. I consider this vote “softer” than SF realises. It is now SDLP who are talking about prisoners rights while SF are using the “L” word in connexion with Derry.

Put frankly….Sinn Féin are losing their touch.

Yet……Dolores Kelly (or maybe Diana Rusk) could have gone a step further. This past weekend, Sinn Féin talked a lot about Wolfe Tone …..in Killarney. Meanwhile in a small village on the shores of Lough Neagh, they insult members of a GAA club named in his honour. For as can be seen in the leaflet, they can’t even spell his name right. Its WOLFE Tone…..not WOLF Tone. Ten years ago, Sinn Féin would not have been so careless.
