Baggott…For God’s Sake Go!

Political Policing….we still have it. It is not necessarily about the old RUC being the paramilitary wing of the old Unionist regime.

Political Policing is about following a narrative dictated from Stormont. supporting the prevailing orthodoxy.

We have a narrative that we have a SHARED HISTORY and a SHARED FUTURE. We are fed a diet of Bread and Circus….MTV Awards…Belfast the coolest destination….the Titanic…Rory McIlroy….Derry …oops Derry-Londonderry City of Culture…G8 Summits…..”our time our place”….we have been conned.

Fool me once…shame on you. Fool me twice…shame on ME!!!!

How many times have we allowed ourselves to be conned? how many more times?

The TV News tells us about the “wrong” image of Norn Iron being shown around the world. WRONG!!! The scumbags who mocked the elderly man trying to visit wife seriously ill wife are as real an image of Norn Iron as Justin Bieber at the MTV Awards.

Trying to protect the image for five weeks has backfired…..Baggott has been parimage protecting the image. The PSNI has manifestly failed to deal with the kinda lawlessness we have seen. Resign!!!

Flags:The Way Out

So …what exactly happens next?

Well…the nationalist parties do not have to do anything. It’s not really a nationalist problem. Yet there are I think three distinct problems.

The Unionists have a problem. The Flags vote is a defeat. And in moments of crisis, unionists circle the wagons. That is what the unionist “Forum” is. The DUP wagon is there. The UUP wagon is there….but both must be a little unhappy to see that the PUP wagon is there….and the TUV wagon….and the UDA wagon. Those minor parties must be delighted to have the respectability of walking down the staircase at Stormont….John Kyle, Jackie McDonald and even Winkie WhatsHisName…..lapping up the prestige of it all.

Peter Robinson and Mike Nesbitt….should feel slightly uncomfortable. This is the unacceptable face of Unionism. There was no “liberal” unionist on view….no John McCallister And no Basil McCrea. And of course no Alliance Party faces. Unionist “outreach” to Catholics is now in tatters. When Push comes to Shove….Robbo and TV Mike see more in common with Kyle, McDonald and Winkie.

Unionists need a “victory”. They need to have something to show.

Where is David Ford, the leader of the Alliance Party? He is after all the Minister for Justice. He claims a mandate from the Assembly but in effect he is little more than the creature of the DUP-Sinn Fein coalition. If he had any er…..testicles he might actually take his party out of the coalition but he has simply gone missing in recent weeks. On the other hand, Naomi Long DOES have er….testicles.

The Alliance Party need…something. They are on a hook and they need to get off it. They would claim that they are there because of their principles. I tend to think they are on that hook because they screwed up and/or because they fell into well organised traps set by unionists and/or nationalists. Long established as the Norn Iron’s Office favourite party, they might well be looking to the British Government to get them off the hook.

And of course there is the continuing problem of continuing street violence.

The phone calls, messages and private conversations between unionists and the NIO and the NIO and the Alliance Party…as would the briefings prepared for Theresa VillIers.

Now what happens next…bearing in mind that Villiers has called for “bold moves”.

Well….is it possible that the NIO propose a solution where the flying of the flag is taken out of the hands of councillors…perhaps issue an edict that the flag flies on designated days in EVERY council area. Not just Belfast, Lisburn and Craigavon….but also in Newry, Derry and Omagh. this would have the effect of off-setting the effect of the “greening” of the west and the South.

This would be something that the unionists could sell to their people, including the likes of Willie Frazer who I would suggest take more pleasure from seeing the British flag over the town hall in Newry on nineteen days than he would take from seeing the same flag over Belfast City Hall all year round.

This would also get the Alliance Party off the hook as they could proclaim that they set up the situation…they were the catalyst for it all. They would be rehabilitated as liberal unionists who are responsible for the British flag flying in all six counties.

But surely this would be unfair on nationalists. Well the liberal unionist/letsgetalongerism position is that nationalists need to face up to the “reality” that Norn Iron is part of the”uk” and that British and unionist symbols take precedence.

Obviously I oppose this so-called solution. I don’t necessarily think that it WILL happen. I merely suggest that it is on the agenda.

Does “Emily Bishop” Dream About….Me?

It must be a sure sign of getting old. I am now dreaming of Emily Bishop/Eileen Derbyshire from Coronation Street. I woke up this morning and immediately told Mrs FJH…who was remarkably unconcerned that I was dreaming of a TV superstar. “Thats nice darlin’……..write about it on that Blog thing you do. Tell Slugger O’Toole”.

In the dream….since you ask….I was at our local village post office and exchanged some pleasantries with Emily/Eileen in the queue. When I got to the counter I said to the clerk “I didnt know that Eileen Derbyshire lived in the village”. And the post office clerk….”oh she has lived here for years”. Hmmm……I think in some way this dream might have been sparked by a conversation I had a few weeks ago with Mrs FJH. We have lived in this village nineteen years and know by name (first and last) just nineteen people….and several are them are from the same family. We are essentially people who “keep to ourselves”.

Yet it strikes me that in retirement the nature of my dreams has changed. I have obviously no work related anxiety so I simply dont have dreams about people I used to work with. Dreams often feature…(sadly deceased in many cases) family members….and perhaps oddly battlefields of the world.

Yet I wonder do we all dream of celebrity? I often dream of the Manchester United team of the 1960s ….but it strikes me that dreaming of a celebrity is actually some kinda weird intrusion into THEIR privacy.

Somewhere in leafy Cheshire, Eillen Derbyshire is not waking up and saying “I dreamt about FitzjamesHorse last night”. Indeed I suppose thats a sign that you are famous…..complete strangers dream about you.

I find Dreams interesting. I am often woken up by the cat from a dream that is the greatest story never told…….and think I should write this down as I will win an Oscar for best screenplay. But by the time I have fed FitzjamesCat, I cant remember the dream. I rarely remember dreams.

I think not remembering dreams might be related to the fact that my late mother and my wife both told or tell me that they could interpret dreams. The problem is that “interpreting” dreams seems to merely involve telling me “oooooooh thats very bad sign”. So if I dream about rabbits, Suzi Quatro, football, rain, Mongolia……it doesnt really matter…..its a “very bad sign”.

But dreams fascinate me because they seem to have a logic all of their own. For example I often dream about Queens University Belfast but somehow the PFC lecture theatres are all underground…….and geographically QUB has “moved” to a non existent building at the corner of Lisburn Road/Sandy Row/University Road.

Likewise when I dream about an airport…..any airport….it seems like a giant branch of WH Smith. And airplanes seem like a flying bus made by Fisher Price. And for some reason every dream I have had about watching Manchester United seems to have me peeping over the balcony of a church rather than being in a massive football stadium.

And Geography seems different. I “know” I am in New York when I walk out of the airport on one side of a narrow street and walk into Macys …..actually looking like a 1960s Woolworths store. I “know” I am inDublin becaus the southern quays to the west of O’Connell Bridge is actually a covered arcade with small kiosks like 1960s Smithfield in Belfast. I “know” I am in Central London when I am at a junction that bears a remarkable similarity to North Street/Royal Avenue in Belfast…..although most London dreams seem to involve trains or non specific underground stations.

Dreams are like a bizarre alternative universe with their own ….consistency. Does it follow that the less active, more house-bound that I am……my dream horizons will be more restricted?

Texas Preview

It is now less than a month until I fly off to the United States …more precisely the liberal part of Texas.

Just to recap on what I will be doing. Well for several years I have been contributing off and on to American websites. One of the really good friendships I have made is with a history professor at a university in Texas.

She has invited me to speak to her post-grad students on three occasions next month. At one level it is an ordeal…I am not a public speaker. And I am not a “qualified” lecturer. Luckily there will only be about twelve people in the audience.

The general subject is Terrorism……and specifically intervention by United States. My friend’s specialist area is Latin America. She thought it would be interesting to get another perspective on Terrorism and Conflict Resolution. And this is what I will be doing. Let me say therefore that I am a “source” rather than an “academic”.

So it is an ordeal in some ways but potentially very liberating. The AGREED object of the discussions…..”lectures” seems the wrong word…. is to challenge an American group. Is for example USA imperialist (which most Americans would deny) or anti-imperialist (as they believe)? We in Europe have different perspectives and indeed those of us who are British, French, German, Spanish etc have a different perspective to those who are Irish, Algerian, Polish and Argentinian.

In other words …”imperial nations” tend to think of themselves as bringing civilisation to the word and horrified that the rest of the world is not grateful. Yet USA is somehow different from the rest of the world. It is…….I believe…..a theory or an idea ……more than it is a nation state as understood by the rest of the world.

Ireland is…..obviously….Ireland. But USA has actually changed. In 1783 it was the eastern seaboard …..then thru purchase and conquest….much of it imperialist and genocidal in nature it has changed its borders. And even in Civil War times, a lot of thought went into expanding USA into Central America. Now the irony is that a lot of this expansion was carried out by people (including the Irish) migrating from tyranny in Europe.

Those of us who have spent any time chatting to IrishAmericans will know that many are anti-British as a default reaction. But in many ways “imperialist” about American Foreign Policy. It is against ths background that I will be talking to American students….the object of the exercise not to be confrontational but to point up some inconsistencies. Can I be subtle?

You all know that I am extremely skeptical about Conflict Resolution….and as it is par for the course for Americans to come over here and lecture me on Conflict Resolution ….then surely I am entitled to go over to Texas and tell them where they have been going wrong for centuries….yes I CAN be subtle.

My position has always been that Peace comes as a consequence of War. Peace in World War Two came about when Hiroshima and Nagasaki had atom bombs fall on them. A peace negotiated in 1942 would have been very different. A European Peace Treaty in 1941 would have been a different “Peace” to May 1945.

In the American context, a negotiated settlement could have prevented the Civil War….at least arguably…..but the result would have been different.

Take our “Flegs” dispute. The week before the City Hall decision, I wrote a piece (for Texas)which contained a  reference to the removal of the Irish Flag (Divis Street 1964). I would expect American students to be outraged at nasty Brits. But think on this. In many American schools, children take a pledge of allegiance to the American Flag. Sioux children do it in Montana  and Apache children do it in Arizona and Hispanic children do it in California and…..Texas. And for that matter it is a pledge made by black and white children in “confederate” South Carolina and Alabama.

So I would argue that a homogenous society can only really be brought about by the total defeat of one side by another. Again the defeat of Nazi Germany led to a de-Nazification process. And indeed the defeat of South Vietnam led to the opening of re-education camps. Are the Conflict Resolutionists in Norn Iron’s Golden Halo so very different ? They want to re-educate us to become lets getalongerist liberal unionists…….but the awkward thing is that the Good Friday Agreement ackmowledged no victor or defeated side. We cant impose victory and defeat.

Increasingly I believe that the Good Friday Agreement is a failure. It was founded on a Big Lie (Creative Ambiguity) for the Common Good. It was undermined by the St Andrews Agreement. Further undermined by a lack of will to implement (for example) a Bill of Rights, Truth & Reconciliation and an Irish Language Act. And further undermined by “conflict resolutionists” imposing a set of beliefs on us.

So how am  tackling the lectures. Well first off I have written (too long…..it will be edited savagely) a piece on the World I was born into (the childhood years 1952-1969) and the increasing awareness in the 1960s of what it meant to be a Catholic in Norn Iron….an interesting sidebar is that the Troubles broke out on the very same weekend that Woodstock was happening in USA. This is an over-long piece but I have recorded it and sent it to my friend in USA. It lasts about 45 minutes.

On the TO DO LIST…….still to be written and/or recorded.

Phase 2…..I want to explain the American connexion from the Colonists to Bill Clinton and how Americn involvement was actually non existent. That the presentation of shamrock in the White House on St Patricks Day is in fact a sham (no pun intended) and I link USA-Irish involvent to a kinda alternative USA in 1847…..Frederick Douglas (black) Choctaw Indians (native American) San Patricio Regt (Mexican) and Captain Marye of Virginia (a future Confederate). I also want to bring in the Ulster-Scots/Scotch Irish and their re-invention here as an ethnic minority…..I see parallels with angry white men (rednecks) in USA.

Phase 3…..Lost Lives. I want to take ten names from the Mckitterick (et others) book Lost Lives. People I knew. Necessarily the people I knew who were killed are MOSTLY but not exclusively West Belfast Catholics….including IRA people….but I want it to as representative as possible. Not sure that I actually need to record this on video. It might be enough to just write this and print off about twenty copies. ……more as background notes.

Phase 4…….I think this is the Arc  of Events in 1971-72 which changed my life. I have already written about this in this Blog……….but Internment, McGurks Bar, Bloody Sunday, Claudy Bomb and Bloody Friday Bombing all happened within a year and brought me from being a naive 19 year old to being…….an only slightly less naive 20 year old. I think that should be recorded on camera.

Phase 5……the Anecdotes. The lighter side. If you know the song “Body of An American” by the Pogues, you will be familiar with the line “there were uncles giving lectures on ancient Irish history”…….well I AM THAT UNCLE. I think it is a simple fact that even when we discuss the most serious of Troubles incidents….sooner or later we fall into “The Troubles According To My Da” (Martin Lynch) mode and start getting into the lighter side of the Troubles. Itwas not ALL bad.

Phase 6……and finally…..(and “about time” you say). …having started with the World that I was born into in 1952……I want to contrast with the World into which my grandchildren are born….the Future and the contrived attempts (MTV Awards, Titanic, Derry City of Culture crap) to make us feel good about ourselves.

Looking forward to it.

Prostate-Gate

Can you believe it? Gerry Adams is 63 years old and has an “old mans problem”. It should be nobody’s business but his own that he has decided to have the problem treated in New York City.

Gerry Adams lives in the Republic of Ireland and could certainly have had the problem treated in Ireland….north or south. He went “private”. Conall McDevitt, a SDLP colleague who I much admire….made an ill considered statement that going private was against SDLP values. Conall makes a lot of press statements. He has a record of calling things right….and has been at the forefront of the SDLP fight back in 2012…..but the problem with issuing a lot of press statements is that sometimes you just get it wrong.

Private Health Care is a difficult issue for a socialist. Those of us of a certain age will recall when Denis Healey, the old British Labour warhorse walked out of an interview with Adam Boulton, then of ITVs breakfast show……when Boulton asked a question concerning Healeys wife getting private health treatment.

Few of us….including Conall McDevitt would regard Denis Healey as anything other than a very committed socialist. Few of us would call him a hypocrite. And I think Denis Healey is fully compliant with SDLP values.

Of course Adam Boulton is now the Political Editor on SKY News. That morning he was simply another journal on the graveyard shift. That morning he was….lets be frank….a cheeky bastard.

Mick Fealty on Slugger O’Toole is no Adam Boulton. So disappointing that he chose to have a thread on Gerry’s wee problem. There seems no legitimate reason to broadcast Gerry’s medical history. …or the fact that he paid for treatment.

A reasonable theory might be that Slugger O’Toole has an agenda which including ridiculing Gerry Adams.

Most socialists advocate a national health service but nearly all of us have families and sometimes that means making difficult decisions if a loved one is in pain and a doctor presents us with an option of “going private”.

I am committed to the belief that some things….health….are just too precious to be bought and sold. More so, my wife who has been employed by the NHS for over thirty years. She is an active trade unionist. But all of us surely have in some way contributed to charities which are supportive of NHS. We tend to turn a blind eye to the fact that many are doing the work that a properly resourced public health service SHOULD be doing.

Conall was foolish to criticise Gerry Adams ……….on THIS occasion. Not least because it directly inspired a second even more risible thread on Slugger from an American-based contributor.

The Night They Drove Old Ulster Down

I have been reading a lot about the old Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu recently. Executed….actually pretty much murdered along with his wife after a show trial on Christmas Day 1989….those images of the old despots on the balcony of the Presidentiazl Palace….remain the defining moments….along with the fall of the Berlin Wall….of the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe.

Few old enough to have seen the news footage will forget the look on Ceausescu’s face as the Mob turneagainst set him.

I wonder has that point been reached in East Belfast. Memorably in 2010, Peter Robinson “lost” the support of the good folks at the Belmont Bowling Club. It is hard to think that the Belmont Bowlers will have been impressed by the mob behaviour around Alliance Party offices at the Holywood Arches.

Robinson, MLA for East Belfast has not ventured out into the streets of his own constituency and seems to be in a Stormont bunker. He has lost middle class respectability AND now seemingly lost the Mob. Certainly the mood on the DUP-UUP benches at the City Hall last night was sombre.

Is it the beginning of the End? For the Institutions? Certainly Theresa Villiers’ floundering about in TV interviews inspires little confidence. And Robinson and Nesbitt have become invisible.

There are pious statements from SDLP and Alliance that “politics must be allowed to work”. I have some sympathy with this view….not least because the suspension of Stormont would leave the same democratic deficit which we saw in the 1980s and 1990s.

But there is an element of special pleading….politicians have careers and so do staffers, advisors and all the rest of the entourage. And clearly there is a danger that another generation of politician…..Conall McDevitt, Gareth Robinson, Judith Cochrane etc may lose the chance to contribute to Society.

But the SDLP needs to get past thinking that the Good Friday Agreement is the Holy Grail. Yes it was a noble attempt to resolve the Conflict….but fatally flawed by Creative Ambiguity. And compromised by the St Andrews Agreement….and I think it has suffered a slow lingering death by Inaction….on say Victims and the Irish Language. The Good Friday Agreement is on a life support machine and the kindest thing would be to make the decision to turn it off.

“It’s Upside Down”

If you are interested in the caption contest over on Slugger O’Toole…..it is a cartoon of a protestor with a Fleg. …..you might want to note that the butchers’sapron is actually upside down…..usually interpreted as a sign of distress.

Willie Frazer

It is hard to take Willie Frazer seriously. For several years I was just prepared to believe that he was well……..a victim. Not a very nice one. But a Victim. Thats the problem with Victims….especially our Troubles victims. Not much (in the grand sheme of things) has happened to me in the years since 1969….and while I would love to think that if the worst had happened to any member of my family that I would be an inspirational advocate for victims (like Alan McBride) or a peace campaigner (like Joyce McCartan) and the truth is that I have never been tested…Thank God….so I just dont know.

Or do I? I know enough about my character to know how petty humiliations such as being stopped and searched by some Kings Own Scottish Borderers (or in some versions of my war diaries…the Black Watch) on the Grosvenor Road in Belfast in 1973. The bastards made me take my shoes off….in the rain….and frankly I hope the bastards roast in Hell. So probably I am no Alan McBride or Joyce McCartan.

The narrow minded “victim” …the unforgiving victim is maybe the kinda victim I would be. In fairness to myself….my nearest and dearest …think I am a better person than I give myself credit for.

Either way….I have for the most part….granted Willie Fraser the courtesy of being a man who has lost family members to Terrorism (as he would see it) in South Armagh and has earned the right to be whatever kinda victim he chose.

Yet he is the most high-profile campaigner for victims….or more precisely SOME victims. For Willie, only the victims of republicans are genuine victims.

He has been …………ahem……understanding of loyalist terrorists, sees little problem with state collusion with loyalists. He was a member of the Ulster Defence Regiment and alleged by a Garda member at the Smithwick Tribunal of being a member of the terrorist group, Red Hand Commando…an allegation he denies. But he has been a fringe unionist politician….never in the mainstream.

As a victims campaigner, he was the leading light in FAIR (Families Acting for Innocent Relatives) but it is an organisation which attracts some controversy because of its use of funding.

The extent to which Frazer is a victim (with or without a political agenda), a self publicist and conspiracy theorist who uses his victimhood to avoid too much scrutiny or just a buffoon….that is a legitimate question. Do we treat him as a knave or a buffoon? He has been the most visible “Flegs protestor” but he does himself an injustice when he claims not to be a public speaker because at heart he is the “man of the people” with the rustic rural accent, an obvious anti-intellectual which the crowd…..lets be frank…..the mob loves. An anti-politician…..but a cute one.

But the combination of being PRIMARILY  a victim (in some eyes) and PRIMARILY a buffoon (in some eyes) and PRIMARILY  sinister (in some eyes) has effectively meant that there is no consensus around him. No reasonable analysis.

Is he bad? Is he mad? Is he dangerous to know?

PayDay Loan Culture

Are you annoyed by those lovable “elderly” puppets (one voiced by Nicholas Parsons) in the Wonga.com (payday loan company) or are you more annoyed at a loan costing 4,212% ?

One of the side effects of watching afternoon television……is that I watch too many adverts for “payday loans”, solicitors who are going to get us all a big claim. Payday Loans effect to tell us that they are doing us all a favour….we need to pay for something and need a quick loan……but rates of 4,212% APR are frankly disgusting and are clearly exploiting vulnerable people.

I am hardly a vulnerable person. Today is Monday. At 9.10am today I received a phone call. As I did on Thursday and Friday of last week. I should point out that my phone is “ex-directory”. The caller confirmed that he was speaking to me……..and then proceeds to ask me if I would like a “pay day” loan.

I make it clear that this was not wonga.com……but it is aggressive selling of a comodity…..MONEY!!! It is disgraceful.
