Ireland At London Olympics…Selected So Far

With the Qualification for 2012 Olympics now in full swing, a timely look at who has already booked their place on the plane to London.

Cycling….Ireland have a quota of three places in the Road Race. No riders have yet been selected but Nicolas Roche, son of Tour de France winner Stephen Roche is likely to be one of them. There is also one place qualified in the Time Trial and Martyn Irvine is still in contention for a Track place.

Swimming….So far only Gráinne Murphy and namesake Barry Murphy have achieved the “A” Standard guaranteeing them a place. Several swimmers have achieved a “B” standard which might earn one or two an invitation but can guarantee themselves a trip to London with the “A” standard in upcoming competitions.

Show Jumping….two quotas are guaranteed most likely Denis Lynch and Billy Twomey. Eventing…three quotas guaranteed with the possibility of two more.

Boxing…..Michael Conlan, John Joe Nevin and Darren O’Neill are already qualified. Several other boxers will be involved in the European Qualification tournament in Turkey (April) and World Champion Katie Taylor should get thru Qualification in China (June).

Gymnastics….Kieran Behan has qualified.

Triathlon….Aileen Morrison (derry) is thru and might be joined by Gavin Noble from Fermanagh.

Sailing….five places. Star Class (two person), 49-er (two person), Womens Laser (one person)

Athletics….Men…….Paul Hession (200metres), Ciarán O’Lionard (1500metres), Alastair Cragg (5000 metres), Mark Kenneally (Marathon), Robert Heffernan (20k Walk,50k Walk), Brendan Boyce (50k Walk).

Athletics ….Women….Derval O’Rourke (100metres Hurdles), Olive Loughnane (20k Walk), Deirdre Ryan (High Jump), Fionnuala Britton (3000 metres Steeeplechase), Stephanie Reilly (3000 metres Steeplechase), Ava Hutchinson (Marathon) Linda Byrne (Marathon) and Tori Ryan (Pole Vault).

Other athletes including David Gillick, Ciara Mageean, Jessie Barr, Joanne Cuddihy and Gladys Ganiel-O’Neill have B standards and might improve. A word for Jason Smyth from Derry, qualified with the B standard at 100 metres. Jason is the Gold Medalist at the 2008 Paralympics. He is visually impaired.

Mens Hockey….Ireland will be involved in a six team Qualification tournament in Dublin later this month. Winners to qualify for London. Womens Hockey….Ireland will be involved in a six team tournament in Belgium later this month. Winners to qualify.

Probability of representation in Badminton, Judo, Shooting, Canoeing, Modern Pentathlon and Rowing.
